Freshmen Serve Their Community

SLA’s Blue and Green Stream freshmen are taking on Semester of Service projects. They were asked, by their African American History teacher Pearl Jonas, to pick a community need and address it. Their approach to this project is reflected by their goals and plans for a lasting impact.

Blue stream was more than willing to speak about their project and what inspired them

“We decided we wanted to work with kids. Our first thought was to work in hospitals but we’re too young. Then we thought why don’t we work in schools?” said Freshman Eva Karlen.

They will be partnering with Russell Byers Charter School, only a few blocks away from SLA on 19th and Arch. They are planning on tutoring and helping children. The kids split up into committees and work together to accomplish their goals.

“We’re writing stories about historical people and places in Philadelphia so we can tie it into African American history.” says Freshman Micheala Peterson, a student in the History and Book Design committee.

They spoke about their idea to write storybooks about our city’s history to read to the children, plus a long list of other ways to teach the kids.

“We’re mentoring them by helping them in the classrooms, we’re gonna read them the books, work outside with them.” says Freshman Dominique Ballinger who is a part of the Logistics committee.

They aim to have a lasting impact on the community.

“We’re gonna aim for this to be a long term thing.” says Eva Karlen

“We want them to have a sense of community pride, it starts a chain reaction.” states Micheala Peterson.

“Yeah. People think we (teens) are lazy as hell. We’re trying to change that.” Freshman Amanda Bolli, member of the Outreach committee, agrees.

Throughout the entire interview, Freshmen Jaime Vaquero was snapping pictures of his fellow classmates and I. When I asked him about it, he explained that he and freshman Julianna Concepcion are a part of the Social Media committee. They run the project’s Twitter, Instagram, and blog.

“It’s to show people our mission,” They said.

Blunt Sports Talk from Mr. Bundy: World’s Fastest Knockout; Lebron James’ Sprite Mix; Michael Vick to Jets; Strickland’s 4 three-pointers in 23 seconds

March 20, 2014 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

World’s Fastest Knockout

Well, that was quick. Fun fact, it probably took you longer to read that last sentence than Sam Heron lasted in the Octagon against Mike Garret at WCMMA 14. In only one second (1.13 seconds, to be exact), Gerret delivered a punishing rear leg head kick to Heron’s dome which knocked him out unconscious. The knockout is an MMA record and in case you’re wondering, yes, this is real.

Lebron James’ Sprite Mix

Thirsty? LeBron James has got you covered.

In between leading the Miami Heat to one of the best records in the NBA and trying to keep pace with Kevin Durant in the MVP race, King James also just created his very own Sprite drink. The drink, which is called Sprite 6 Mix by LeBron James, is a mix of Sprite’s traditional lemon-lime flavor along with cherry and orange. It will be available nationwide in the coming months for a limited time.

“I never imagined I would have my own flavor someday,” James said in a statement that was just released. “I’m proud of what we created and I’m excited for my fans to try it.”

So who wants one? Check out the videos below to hear more about LBJ’s new signature drink.

Michael Vick to Jets?

Is Geno Smith going to be the starting quarterback for the Jets next season?

We thought that was the plan. But according to reports out of New York, the Jets are bringing Michael Vick in for a visit on Friday to talk about the possibility of him joining the team for the 2014-15 NFL season. And while it’s just a meeting, Vick is only said to be interested in signing with a team that will allow him to compete for a starting QB position next season. So if things go well and Vick ends up signing with Gang Green, it could be bad news for Smith.

The Raiders and Bills have also reportedly expressed some interest in Vick. So Smith shouldn’t be too worried just yet. But stay tuned. This could get interesting.

With only 28.3 seconds left in the the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association championship game, the Red Deer College Kings were down by seven points to the Langara College Falcons. You mind as well stick a fork in Red Deer College because they were done, right? Well, no one probably could’ve foreseen the Kings’ Lloyd Strickland going to go off in an effort to bring his team back from the brink by knocking down four 3-pointers in 23 seconds. Unfortunately, even with all of Strickland’s heroics, Red Deer College wasn’t able to complete the comeback. The Falcons were able to hold onto a slim 88-86 win.

Lights Out at SLA!

March 18, 2014 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

Melissa Alvarez

Staff Writer

At 7:55 AM  on March 17th, there was a power outage in the SLA center city building. Not to the surprise of many teachers, the students were ecstatic hoping for an early dismissal. Everyone was sent up to their advisories to wait and hear what would happen next.

At around 8:45 AM all the lights went on and the power returned leaving students disappointedly trudging to their first period classes.

This begs the question though, what happened?

ILP Coordinator Jeremy Spry told SLA Media, “Our power went off and about three hundred other residents’ power also went out. We don’t know the cause of it. Once the power went out we contacted Philly Management who are our landlords and they went to PECO to try and get an answer. We had no real time frame of when the power was going to return so Mr.Lehmann contacted Dennis Creedon who is his boss to ask for guidance. But we are not allowed ever to release students from school without approval from the School District of Philadelphia.”

We also asked a few students what they thought about the black out, here’s some of their responses:

“It was so depressing like you should’ve seen how it was. The light came on and everyone was like “AWWW” and no one said anything. We all just packed up and went to class.” Junior, Khadijah Fofana

"I didn't really care that much. I thought it was annoying when everyone was like screaming and stuff. The room was so hype about it. But I didn't really care if we got out or not." Sophomore, Avery Monroe

Scarves are cool!

What’s your favorite store and why?
