March Madness Reminiscing

April 21, 2014 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

“COME ON DEKKER!” “SHOOT THE BALL!” “PASS!”

These are common things I hear when trying to go to sleep in my household in march. The hype of March Madness has yet again passed.

My dad, mom, sister, and I are all dedicated Wisconsin Badger fans. This year, with them going to the final four, the excitement was as high as ever. Our family was decked out in red sweatshirts/shirts and choosing our favorite players.

March Madness has a culture to it, and my family loves it. Every year during March I can expect the screams, baked snacks, and wild cheers. It brings my family together (my grandparents came from Massachusetts) and also brings to life old rivals (boo Kentucky).

For the Wisconsin vs Kentucky game, we had 20 people in our living room cheering on the good guys (mostly). The few Kentucky fans were constantly booed and my mom may have threatened to kick them out of the house. Unfortunately they stayed, and Kentucky got a lucky shot for the win.

It was a hard loss, considering the well loved Badgers only lost by one point. Devastated, we all went to bed and reminisced over the great season.

The Badgers are #2 when predicting how good their season will be for 2015. I look forward to the Badgers winning and kicking butt

Frozen Craze on Youtube

Everyone’s been crazy about Frozen since it hit the big screen on November 27, 2013. It’s been Youtube’s biggest parody craze since Twilight or Harry Potter. People from all walks of life have been making videos singing “Let it Go” and “Do You Want to Build a Snowman.”

From Doctor Who fan’s, to the on running joke of the unreliable google translate converting songs into barely recognizable lyrics, the soundtrack of Frozen has had it’s fair share of internet stardom. Here are a few of my favorite and not so favorite Frozen parodies.

Will You Help me Hide a Body

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4jPQw5nSIY

I have to say that this short video is my favorite parody so far. I lean more to the sardonic side of humor so I literally laughed out loud during this one. It’s clever, unique, and definitely hilarious.

Most Dramatic Do You Want to Build a Snowman

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2hJYS6XNiw

A friend showed me this one and she thought it was hilarious, as do most people. However, I find it mildly disturbing. There’s just something about a child screaming bloody murder that doesn’t exactly make me feel like laughing. Then again, that’s just me. If you’re like most people, who enjoy the sound of distressed children, then I’d definitely recommend it.

Mitch Grassi- Let It Go from Frozen

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRMCn_paypM

A friend showed me this one as well. At first, I didn’t believe that this was actually Mitch Grassi singing but apparently it is. The man has a ridiculous vocal range. I also appreciated the paper snow at the end.

“Do You Wanna Build a Snowman” from Frozen according to Google Translate

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mqG5l-9wIE

A perfect example of how unreliable google translate is. Yeah, It’s funny, but I’m sick of the google translate videos. We get it, it’s unreliable. It’s a website created to translate one or two words for a high school spanish project, not an entire song into 24 different languages and back again. What could you honestly have expected?

“Let it go” Multi-Language

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC83NA5tAGE

I really liked this one. I stumbled upon it on the interwebs one evening and it was just so sweet it gave me goosebumps. Listening to all those women sing Let it Go in their own language really gave the song a sense of being. It’s crazy to think that people all over the world are singing the same song that’s been stuck in your head for months.

Here’s a few more noteworthy parodies, spoofs, and heartwarming Frozen videos to check out.

Despite Budget; Philadelphia gets New Schools

April 17, 2014 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

new-high-schoolsDespite the Philadelphia School District shuttering around 40 schools and almost not being able to open on time this year, the district for the 2014-2015 year is opening 3 new schools. The schools, building21, The U School, and The LINC are all now accepting applications for their inaugural school years’.

According to Philadelphia’s The Notebook, “These innovative schools will share common educational features: They will be small, proficiency-based, focused on youth development, and connected to real-world experience. (See this guide from the District for a short primer on the new school models.)”
These schools will be opening admissions to students citywide but generally want most of their student body to be made up of kids from the neighbor hood, since all three now inhabit what was a neighborhood school.
For student’s interested, additional information sessions will be held on April 11, 5-8 p.m. at Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, 2800 W. Cheltenham Ave.

Netflix Flicks

By Nicholas Murray

Netflix is an efficient way to stream shows and movies anywhere. I have recently started to use Netflix to do just this. I (with much obsession) successfully watched everything I intended to watch and much more. There are many good shows to watch on Netflix, but at the same time, there are some shows that I wish were on it, to watch for the first time or to watch more the tenth time. This is an article about two good shows currently on Netflix and one show in particular I would like to see added.

Archer is an animated tv show which features a lot of humor on the mature side. It follows spies from the organization, “ISIS,” with the main character Archer. With its constant “sophisticated” humor, and the total 49 episodes available on on Netflix, it will keep you entertained for a while.

A few weeks ago, a “new” show was added to Netflix, which had many people feeling nostalgic. This show was Pokemon: Indigo League, the original Pokemon series. For many, including me, this was the best out of the following series. Following Ash Ketchum and his pokemon pikachu, we see them battle and befriend other trainers on Ash’s journey to become a Pokemon Master. Featuring the first 52 episodes of the Pokemon series, those who want to revisit their childhood, or those who want to watch it for the first time. can watch it all on Netflix.

One Piece is a very popular anime centering around the pirate Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy ate a Devil Fruit which gave him the properties of rubber. Using his power he sets out to create his own crew in order to find the ultimate treasure, “One Piece,” and become the pirate king. This show has a great blend of humor and tragedy, with each character having a deep backstory that will leave the watcher wanting more. With an astonishing 643 episodes, and no sign of slowing down, it would be great to have this added to Netflix to be watched by all.

Netflix has made my social life a bit easier by allowing me to watch popular shows that my friends obsess over. Anyone who does not have an account, should at least think about doing so. It may not be the best for everyone, but you may find good shows on it like I have, or obsess over the ones that are not on it. It’s your choice.

Eagle Mock Draft- Sports Talk with the Straight Shuter

April 11, 2014 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

As a Philadelphia sports fan I have a ridiculous amount of interest in the Philadelphia Eagles, and by extension what they do in the NFL Draft. With this being head coach Chip Kelly’s second year, he now has established himself as the leader of this team, which also means he has a plan. Every head coach has a plan, but usually a coach doesn’t know what to expect in their first year, therefore Chip Kelly now knows what to do, and how to do it.

Round 1: 22nd Overall Pick

Justin Gilbert (Cornerback) Oklahoma State

Justin Gilbert is my favorite person in this draft. There is a very real, very likely chance that he is not available when the Eagles pick. However, the recent reports are that Gilbert has struggled with separating too much from wide receivers in game, I am not concerned, but NFL teams will be. In his latest mock draft ESPN draft expert Todd McShay, has him going 25th overall to the San Diego Chargers. This would obviously mean that the Eagles are passing on him. If he is indeed available at the Eagles pick and they don’t draft him………..AHHHHHHHHHH!

Round 2: 42 Overall Pick (From Buffalo Bills for Bryce Brown (Running back) and 5th Round Pick

Allen Robinson (Wide Receiver) Penn State

This is what everyone wanted to see! Now Washington Redskins’ wide receiver DeSean Jackson’s replacement does not come in the first round as many people expect, but in the second round. Allen Robinson reminds me of Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall. He is big, he has great hands, and he runs great routes. The downside to Robinson is his speed, but if he can produce for Penn State, I am certain he can produce for the Eagles. The only scenario I see different here is if the Eagles choose to go for Cody Latimer of Indiana or Jordan Matthews of Vanderbilt.

Round 2: 54 Overall Pick

Kyle Van Noy (Linebacker) BYU

The best part about the trade is that the Eagles manage to keep their own second round pick, which they can use on defense. I love Kyle Van Noy, I personally think he belongs in the first round, which is why once again he may not make it back to the Eagles, but the great thing is, since the Eagles have that other second round pick in this scenario, they could take Van Noy higher if they feel he may not make it back to them, and draft Jordan Matthews here.

Round 3: 86 Overall

Deonne Buccanon (Safety) Washington State

Buccanon is a very solid safety with excellent coverage skills. Yet another blessing pick for the Eagles, Buccanon is in my opinion one of the five safeties in the draft. After this pick the Eagles’ draft would officially be a success as every area of need is addressed, and addressed well. Now we get to start having fun.

Round 4: 122 Overall

Jeff Janis (Wide Receiver) Saginaw Valley State

Who is Jeff Janis, and where is Saginaw Valley State? Both very valid questions. Jeff Janis is a wide receiver prospect that exploded at the NFL scouting combine, very few people know who he is because after getting injured in high school, he went from a five star recruit to a nobody. Now, Jeff Janis has exploded back into the world of football, however his fame was brief as once again no one knows who he is. He is basically a faster and more explosive Eric Decker, who is a wide receiver for the New York Jets. This means that Janis is an above average number two receiver but not a great number one receiver. In the fourth round this would be an awesome pick.

Round 7: 237 Overall

Wesley Johnson (Offensive Lineman) Vanderbilt

Wesley Johnson is basically everything and anything on the offensive line. The Eagles might draft him in the seventh round so that they have insurance in case of injury to one of their offensive lineman.

If the Eagles follow this draft, look for them to be real contenders in 2014.
