Editorial: Net Neutrality

nnNet neutrality. Sounds boring, doesn’t it? You may be wondering what this is, or why it should matter to you. We are here to tell you the importance of keeping this system in place and what it does.

Net neutrality is a “principle” that allows open and free internet access. Service providers are not able to ban a website or slow down the speed just because of their views or profit.

The number one rule of net neutrality is that all data must be treated equally. Without net neutrality Facebook and Google would have never been built and have become so prominent in society.

How would you find the information you need for a project without the help of sites like Google, Yahoo, or Ask?

What a world without net neutrality looks like:

Picture a highway with two lanes. One lane is an express lane, with less cars. This lane allows them to reach their destination, faster. However, to go into the express lane you must pay extra. Naturally the regular, no extra fee lane will be full of traffic because it is the cheaper choice.

Netflix, Facebook, Google, and Twitter would load very quickly. However small-business sites and blogs would load very slowly, if at all. We cannot give our Internet Service Providers (ISPs) this power.

Comedian John Oliver talked about net neutrality on his show, “Last Week Tonight.” Oliver believes that net neutrality is a very boring issue but has a lot of power. He urged people to go and comment on how they should keep net neutrality in place.

What this looks like for companies:

Some critics believe that this will stop companies from keeping up with the ever growing industry of technology. As well as limit possibilities. The FCC has been talking about this issue for a decade, the main topic of discussion is how to maintain a stable internet safe zone while still letting it be open. They have concluded that the way to reach this goal is to set some ground rules.

Without net neutrality internet providers such as Comcast and Verizon would be able to block certain content and gain more income because they are not paying for the site to run. Well, without this principle the more money you pay the faster your internet will be. Imagine having to pay a toll just to get access to a page, including your favorite websites on the interweb.

Net neutrality is a big monopoly. Meaning there is no competition, one single ISP would own nearly all of the market. They would sell internet packages to you at incredibly high prices and get away with it because there is no competitor and they have the best products to offer.

What this looks like for an SLA student:

You have a paper that is due at midnight and it is currently nine o’clock. You have only written your name on the piece. The essay requires you to use at least 5 sources. The requirement is 2 pages. With only three hours to go you open up your computer. All of the sources you have tried to look at are still loading. Only one has loaded and of course it is wikipedia. You now have two hours to go with only half a page written. This is what will happen without net neutrality.

Many of the sites that are on the internet are banned from the school district, so us as students already understand the feeling of not being able to view a certain site. Now this same technique is used by your ISP. So much more of the internet will be off limits, creating a more difficult path to gain knowledge.

We support net neutrality. And want to keep it in place. This “principle” is so incredibly important to not just us, but to everyone in the every growing world. February 26 the FCC will come to a decision.

We cannot allow the big corporations to make this decision for us. We need to make them hear our voices. Our opinions matter too.

Question:

Note: The movie does not have to be actually nominated but just an opinion of the interviewee.

What movie should be the oscar best picture and why?

I think The Lego movie should win the award of best movie nominated or not, because they started the process of getting everything approved in 2005 and was able to start script in 2007, then were able to started making the movie in 2011. They put a lot of work in it, they didn’t just take a year or so and just spit out a movie. They put in a lot of dedication and I respect that. I was disappointed that they haven’t won any awards for it yet. The visual effects were excellent, they had a great combination of animation and stop motion. Also for a pg movie it still kept me interested and entertained using a mixture “kiddie jokes” and a few “adult” jokes that were slipped in and in a way were it wasn’t too obvious. I think the story was really original. I liked how they used a subject where many people grew up on and kids this days grew up which are legos. What made it better than other movies with the same concept like Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is that they were able to come up with a completely new story because there never was one in the first. Another reason is because there also wasn’t anything to base it off of like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles where they say they had a few facts wrong with the characters. As well as the story and concept, I liked the cast. The scenes where Morgan Freeman’s character had to make ridiculous noises had me imagining him in the sound booth looking like a crazy man along with other actors who had to scream in some scenes. Also the whole ending and moral of the movie was that everyone is creative in their own way and that everyone has the right to express it. No one should hold you from being the best you can and if people are bringing you down and don’t believe in you.. You should believe in yourself regardless and stay true to yourself, if you do so you can accomplish your wildest dreams.

Valentine’s Day Gone Wrong

Funny & Embarrassing Valentine’s Day Stories

When it comes to Valentine’s, day many people first imagine it as a lovely “holiday” where people shower their love one with love, affection and gifts. Usually when planning ahead, they assume everything will go perfectly and it will be the most romantic and memorable time of the year. However, this is not always how it goes.

I went around the SLA community and ask people what were their most funny and embarrassing Valentine’s Day stories,. Based on what I found, the holiday has developed to a time to be by themselves and just joy alone time or a time for casual interactions with love ones and not so much serious and romantic. Also I noticed that not so many boys had an experience with the holiday.

“Its Not The Sameeeee!”

This story comes from  Tianna McNair, a 10th grader. She told me that a couple years ago she didn’t have a valentine and was very upset. So her grandfather bought her some candy to cheer her up. Later that day she was in the car with her father eating the candy when he slammed the brakes and the candy flew out her hand. Her father wanted to make up for her, so he took her to the dollar store and bought her some more. The candy wasn’t just not as good– Tianna found it nasty. So she started crying again saying, “Its not the sameeeeee!”

“#FrankUnderwoodForLife”

The second person that had an interesting story about Valentine’s Day was the photography & digital video teacher and the baseball coach, Mr. Herman He told me jokingly that “Netflix was really crafty about how they launched the second season of house of cards on Valentine’s Day” He didn’t want to miss such an opportunity so unlike any other year where he normally cooks dinner for his girlfriend, he boycotted the holiday instead with a marathon of House of Cards. he now represents the hashtag, #Frankunderwoodforlife.

“All Fun & Games until Someone Gets Lice”

Zoe Anderson, a fellow 10th grade student, allowed me to share her third grade Valentine’s Day experience. Before Valentine’s Day, she had unknowingly gotten lice. She end up infecting the whole class on Valentine’s Day. As a joke and apology, Zoe and her mother made cards with cartoon lice on them and passed them out to her classmates once everyone was treated.

You’re Awesome Girl!”

During her 2nd grade year, Michaela Peterson’s mother was a guest speaker at her school. Her mother also brought in candy hearts with messages on them. Michaela helped pass them out. When she approached a boy in her class named Miles, she gave him a candy heart. What surprised Miles was that it read “You’re awesome girl”. Miles assumed that Michaela purposely gave that specific one to him. People started talking to him as if he was a girl and gave him a female name as a joke. For a while, Michaela and Miles found that experience awkward and the two of them couldn’t look at each other for a week.

“What is this?!”

Katarina Backo wasn’t born here in America. In fact she was born in Serbia and hasn’t been here in her new of the USA for more than 5 years. When she came to America on January 18th in 2011, she didn’t know much about the customs, culture and even any English. When Valentine’s Day came around she had only adjusted just a little bit so she could at least understand some English but still not aware of most of the culture. When she was in class a boy was passing out valentines. When he handed one to her, she then freaked out because she was not aware of what Valentine’s Day was and what was handed to her. She quickly gave it back and yelled to him “What is this?!”

Where do you usually buy your clothing?

Honestly, everywhere! Most of the time I buy clothes from American Eagle and online shopping. I practically find new shopping sites everyday!

Any style inspiration?

Me, myself, and I! I usually just wear things that I like and would be comfortable wearing.

Do you have a favorite fashion trend?

I love harem pants! I love the flowy look it has when I’m wearing them. I hope to buy more soon!

Least favorite trend?

I hate when bandeaus are used as shirts. Don’t get me wrong, I do like wearing a bikini top to the beach, but I don’t like that trend as a part of an everyday outfit.

What is your favorite article of clothing you currently own?

I have this big, fuzzy, blush-pink sweater, that I got from H&M, that I could wear everyday. The sweater is pretty versatile so I can wear it in a lot of different ways. I love oversized sweaters
