App Review: Trivia Crack

January 22, 2015 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

Ella Donesky
Staff Writer

Do you know what the most common transplanted organ is? Or what country is the largest producer of milk in the world? Perhaps you know what breed Scooby Doo is?

Okay, Me neither. But after a few rounds playing the App Store’s #1 game, Trivia Crack, you may find out.

Until I was tasked with reviewing the popular game, I had not played it. Now, I receive notifications hourly telling me my opponent lost and it’s my turn to spin. Soon after I first downloaded the app, I must say I became slightly addicted. Fortunately, I’ve lost some interest, but I still cannot resist tapping the colorful square icon when I open my phone.

The objective of the game is to unlock six characters, each named after their category: art, entertainment, sports, history, geography and science. In order to obtain a character, you must answer three questions correctly in any of the six categories. Then, if you and your opponent have both secured at least one character, you have the option to unlock a new character by answering correctly the question corresponding to the character. Or you can really test your knowledge in a match to secure your opponent’s character. It sounds complicated, more so when you mix in the occasional sports question (Honestly, who really knows what the logo is on the Oakland Raiders helmet?).

I immediately fell in love with the soft, cartoon-like graphics. It’s a bit cheesy, of course, but very cute, appealing, and well-organized, not to mention festive, with the tune which plays every time I answer correctly. In all seriousness, the aesthetics of the game are very important to the user experience. While it’s not the graphics that attract me to the game, it’s that it doesn’t looking rigid and distasteful which encourages me to not abandon it. The buttons are large and it’s clear that whoever designed the app invested considerable effort and detail in their creation.

Besides that, the interactive experience of answering questions via switches, buttons and toggles feel nicely, reassuringly, appropriately reactive, meaning, when I press a button, it behaves like a button. Trivia Crack switches in and out of screens without lag. Something I’m not too jazzed about, however, are the oodles of ads which pop up on my screen almost every other game, though this may be my fault, as I’m too stingy to spend $1.99 to upgrade to an ad-free version.

Though this comes as a disappointment to many players, I’m personally extremely grateful that you cannot start more than three games in one hour (it seems sometimes like people are only starting to catch on that social media is addictive). And while I found that the timespan bothered many users (about thirty seconds), it was just short enough that I couldn’t look up the question online.

As for the questions, I think they’re great! Admittedly, some of the questions are a bit trivial, but landing your spinner in any category besides entertainment will guarantee that you’ll learn something new. I appreciate the question generating system, another great interactive feature. Questions are created, approved and even translated by the Trivia Crack Community, so you’ll rarely encounter questions you’ve answered before.

Though it may not be important for one to know, for example, the name of Paris Hilton’s dog, I found that playing Trivia Crack has allowed me to memorize important historical dates, geographical locations, and has even made me curious to explore a topic further, especially when I answer incorrectly.

(In case you were wondering, the answers to the questions above are, Kidney, India and Great Dane)

On a side note, my spinner looks like this half the time:

2014: Plane Crashes and Safety

January 21, 2015 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

Chiara Nemati

Staff Writer

Many people find themselves afraid of flying, whether it is because they are afraid of crashing, heights, being in small places, or fear of public spaces.

2014 has been a big year for this fear.  Malaysia has had an especially tough year in the aviation industry, they have lost three planes in the air and had a lot of struggles finding the planes in the oceans, stirring up conspiracy theories as to where the planes went. The search is still on for AirAsia flight 8501.

On July 17, Malaysian flight MH17 was shot down, whether it was Russia or Ukraine is still unclear, 298 passengers were onboard. All were killed, two-thirds of the passengers were Dutch. Once there was a pause in the fighting between Russia and Ukraine, a Dutch team when down to the crash site, in Ukraine, to look for bodies. This is not the first time a plane has been shot down in Ukraine, however. Many military planes have been shot down by missiles over the past couple of weeks leading up to the crash of flight MH17.

This is not the first Malaysian flight to go down. Earlier in March Malaysian flight 370 lost contact and disappeared, 239 people were on board. The flight departed from Kuala Lumpur and was set to land in Beijing but never made it. Both of these planes were Boeing 777 models. An AirAsia flight containing 162 passengers has gone missing as well. This has proved to be a terrible year for Malaysian aviation.

A lot of the news has been covering the scary truths about flying, but when taking a closer look, you can easily see that planes are actually very safe. The statistics prove it. There are about 42 thousand airports around the world. On average there are 86 plane crashes a year according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). For the millions of flights that take off yearly this is not bad at all.

Planes are built to ensure as much safety as possible for the passenger. In fact, the transportation industry looks at the safety and regulations of planes under a fine-toothed comb. If you fly out of the United States, statistics say that the chance of being in a fatal accident is one in seven million. We tend to think that planes are very unsafe and will try to take another form of transportation to get to our destination if possible. However driving is way more unsafe than taking a commercial flight– a hundred deaths are caused each day  auto accidents.

Aviophobia is the fear of flying. Nathan Feiles (a psychologist) digs deeper into this phobia and explains its cause. Many things can lead to the fear of flying such as, lack of control, fear of heights, as well as public fear. Feiles goes on to say “Some people feel if they’re not in control of something that it will go wrong. So if we’re not flying the plane (or don’t understand how the plane or flying works), our feeling is that we will crash. “ Plane crashes may stick in the minds of the general public because of many reasons. One reason is also the overactive imagination some people have. Overactive imagination causes the brain to create scenarios that may actually never happen. However they implement fear. Another factor is the fact that the media knows how well a news piece that engages fear, sells.

Despite all these setbacks and scares you may have heard on the media, planes are actually very safe. These incidents will just increase safety regulations more than what they were these past few years.

The Legacy of Dr. King: Are We Living in His Dream or His Nightmare?

Trayvon-Martin-Hoodie-Dr-Martin-Luther-King-Jr-s-Niece-Says-He-Would-Never-Dress-Like-That-2

Many years ago, Dr. King gave an infamous speech in which the simple term “I have a dream” would become part of one of the most infamous speeches in human history. Years after King has died many fear that the dream we had hoped, and even though we had accomplished hasn’t come to life, however age old racism is still pertinent today in new and hidden, and even very public ways. This article will be used to briefly discuss a bit on how much has changed since Kings times- for good or worse- King’s modern image and where as a collective society the next point is.

Statistics have shown that there is still prejudice against african americans, but in a much smaller ways. For example, when considering job applicants, employers are less likely to hire someone who has a more “ethnic name” than what could be considered a “white name”. African Americans make up most of the prisoners in the united states, even though they are proportionally a minority to collective white americans. And I believe many of these cases are for more petty crimes like drug abuse, so in these subjects we can begin to see a pattern of internalized racism, which can be a harder subject and system to dismantle.

Concerning King himself he’s become nothing short of an icon, but perhaps an often misinterpreted one. Many forget that it was King’s fiery speeches and rebellious actions against his oppressors, which landed him in prison that might come into contrast with people’s notions of him being the ultimate peacemaker. And while he was a very peaceful man, even more so than many others who were fighting for the same things he was, it’s important to take these kind of notions with a grain of salt. It’s entirely possible that the fear of misinterpretation caused King’s family to controversely withhold any and all speeches of his from being used in the award winning film “Selma”, as all of King’s speeches were copyrighted by him before his death. And while I can see that perspective of not wanting such an important figure- both to them personally and to the world in general- Kings family hasn’t been known to get along- varying on ideological viewpoints and even being, as some might say “greedy” in giving out the speeches and demanding a lot of money for them (about $800,000 in one case) which makes me think theres an unfortunate underlay to the story. And while I can see that handing out those speeches to any film wouldn’t be a great idea, this one would have had more littermate backing I would think that they would have known it would be something special.

The topic of race in America has been particularly prevalent these past few months with the wake of the Ferguson and Eric Garner decisions, making many lose faith in the police department and criticizing them for racial profiling. Among these controversies is on how little vocal conversation has come from celebrities, who remained silent on this issue, especially when so many did things like the ice bucket challenge. It reminded me on Kings quote of impartiality; “I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Council or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice…”

I think that the best way to continue Dr. King’s legacy in a way that celebrates who is was and what he stood for is to give voice to the issues of oppressed people. Rather than remain off to the side or impartial about the issues concerning race that rock our world we should take stand against it, loudly and vocally until we can all do our best to dismantle the problems that plague our world. And while we might be able to cure racism entirely, it is with hope we can try to leave the world a better place a bit better then when we came into it, like Dr. King himself.

With so many good looking films coming this year, lets take a look at the years most anticipated, and perhaps smaller known gems, hitting theaters soon

Screen Shot 2015-01-08 at 12.18.55 PMJupiter Ascending

The previous Wachowski film; Cloud Atlas will always go down as one of my favorites, if not my #1 favorite film, so naturally I’m curious about their next picture, and boy it does not look like it will disappoint. With some truly breathtaking images and an all star cast, including Golden Globe winner Eddie Redmayne as the film’s villain, Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Sean Bean, Douglas Booth, this seems like a truly promising film. While the plot seems a little predictable at glance, it’s sure to be an entertaining ride all the way through and definitely worth seeing on the big screen, trust me.

Release date: February 6th

While I suspect It won’t be the best rated nor successful film of the year, it definitely looks like one of the most fun. with thrilling fantasy visuals including dragons, magic, monsters, witches and more, paired with a cast including Oscar nominated actress Julianne Moore, playing a villainous witch, Jeff bridges as an ageing evil fighter, Ben Barnes as his apprentice and other like Kit Harington bring this to a promising roundout. The story centers around a young man named Thomas who, under the tutelage of aging Master Gregory, learns to fight off the evil spirits of the world, especially with the escape of the evil witch Mother Malkin. I’d recommend taking advantage of the big screen and this films effects and treat yourself to a little fantasy.

Kingsmen: The Secret Service

Nice suits, attractive people, action, a knife- on prosthetic legs assassin, british spies- what more is there to love? The director of X- Men: First Class, which was a surprising, action packed and even at times humorous treat; that looks as if will be continued here with Kingsmen, also based on a comic book of the same name.  With a cast varying from the unexpected hero of colin firth,  handsome newcomer Taron Edgerton, the always- a delight- Samuel L. Jackson as the villain along with Michael Caine, Mark Strong and even a cameo appearance from Mark Hamill (which is a joke relating to his appearance in the comic) A summer blockbuster for a winter blockbuster has a lot of promise, and  looks like a whole ‘lotta fun.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron

With the surprising success of The Avengers and the massive media giant that is marvel, their upcoming blockbuster is sure to be . With a plethora of success and it’s previous installment breaking many box office’s and becoming eating the place of 3rd most successful movies in the world, It’s sure to be a talk of the summer. Part of the appeal is the new villain, and while some are good I’ve personally felt that the villains were not the MCU’s strongest suit, but this is a character I’ve found interesting and looks to be  brought to life with chilling grace by the talented James Spader, leaving me with a hopeful promise of something wonderfully entertaining. But i’ll try to go in without too many reservations/ expectations, so that there are no strings on me…

Mad Max: Fury Road

A blood pumping action ride, with eye catching visuals and an all star cast, the reboot of the mad max franchise seems to have its teeth out for the new world (and a new potential audience at that). For anyone unfamiliar with the franchise; it takes place in a post apostolic future where humans are now practically savages who fight in the heat of the sun armed to the teeth with sharp devices and roaring engines. This installment features the talented Tom Hardy as the titular Max, including actors and actresses nearly unrecognizable in their roles like Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult. With some good actors and a pure escapism realm of overdone action, this looks to be an entertaining ride.

CHAPPiE

We see so often films and tv shows warning us of the dangers of technological progression. Whether it’s the Robot uprising, the media hungerness in us all we have seen many depictions of the warnings moving forward. This does not look like one of those films. Instead what CHAPPiE promises is instead, our ability as humans to create something so different, yet so human at the same time. In the film CHAPPiE is a robot and AI who, rather than being some ingenious stoic computer from the get-go learns about the world around him, like a child learning what words mean and how things work. Within his group of misfits CHAPPiE has found a home, but it doesn’t look too secure as he will face rejection from the world around him. While it doesn’t carry many A- listers, aside from Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and even Dev Patel, it looks like it one of the strongest performers will be CHAPPiE himself, done through motion capture by Sharlto Copley. This film truly seems like it will be a thought provoking and heart warming/ shattering film that you might walk out of the theater more than a little changed.

Release date: March 6th

Jurassic_World

Jurassic World

It’s been several years since we’ve seen the dinosaurs terrorize us within the jurassic franchise, but its latest and potentially one of its greatest, will give us something entirely new to fear. Set 22 years after the original film, the Dinosaur theme park “Jurassic world” has been running smoothly for about 10 years, however visitors are beginning to decline. So in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, as well as re-spark visitor’s interest, the Park’s scientists create a new attraction, a genetically engineered, original and looks to be terrifying dinosaur. However soon it escapes, and it’s getting hungry, with a whole park of innocents on the dinner menu… With some strong cast members like Parks and Rec/ Guardians of the Galaxy’s Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jake Johnson Katie Mcgrath, Nick Robinson- this looks like a movie to ‘really get your teeth’ into.

Terminator: Genisys

Past and present meet in another installment of the infamous Terminator franchise, that has Arnold Schwarzenegger return to the role that made him infamous. A new timeline has been created, in which Kyle Reese, a protagonist in the original film, comes to the past to save Sarah Connor (like in the original film) only to find her on quest to save the world from Skynet, with the ageing Schwarzenegger Terminator, and will face off against the menacing machines of the evil Skynet, including the infamous t-1000 and apparently multiple younger version of Schwarzenegger’s terminator. With an impressive ensemble including Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke as the infamous Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney, J.K Simmons, Doctor who’s matt smith, Jason Clarke and of course Mr. Schwarzenegger himself.

Release Date: July 1st

Pan

From the trailer alone it looks to be a promising adventure filled tale of a new and unique take on the infamous world of Neverland. This land, It’s peter Pan himself who is whisked from 19th century London by villainous captain… Blackbeard. As you’ve probably guessed by this point, this story is essentially a prequel to the iconic peter pan story that shows how pan becomes the legend we all know of him as. It’s trailer shows a number of eye catching and imaginative scenes, costuming and sets that should be appealing to multiple audiences. It also includes a great cast, such as Hugh Jackman as the film’s villain Blackbeard, Garrett Hedlund as a younger, heroic Hook, Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily, Amanda Seyfried and newcomer Levi Miller as the titular hero. With enough for a wide number of people, it looks to be a good summer adventure.

Release date: July 24th

LEGEND-Tom-Hardy__140612175540-575x383

Legend

In the 1960’s London was terrorized by crime, especially from the violent Reggie and Ronnie Kray; twins who are almost synonymous with this time. Both twins will be acted by the talented Tom Hardy, who has been proving himself more and more capable of tackling a range of characters,  which part of what makes me intrigued and interested in the film.  It has also attached a wonderful cast like harry potter’s David Thewlis, Doctor who’s Christopher Eccleston as the police officer dedicated to taking down the Crays, Merlin’s Colin Morgan, Emily Browning as Ronald’s wife, Kingsmen’s Taron Edgerton as Reggie’s boyfriend and more. Along with some smart suits/ clothing and interesting period of time, this looks to be an interesting piece to watch.

Release date: (tentative) October 1st

Spectre

Coming from a family of James bond fans, and enjoying the recent films myself, I sometimes asked if they would ever be able to bring the iconic villains from the 60s that had been so parodied in the Austin Powers movies. That seems to be what they are doing here; and after the last film, which I fully enjoyed, and rounded by a stellar cast; including 2 time oscar winner Christoph Waltz (who was born to play a bond villain) supposedly playing the infamous blofield, this can’t come soon enough.

Release date: November 6th

hateful8

The Hateful Eight

Quentin Tarantino is a filmmaker with a long history of successes and a following of many who appreciate his masterful craft. His new film tells the tale of 8 bounty hunters in post civil war america who meet while traveling during a blizzard  and thus chaos ensues. With some interesting cast members like previous tarantino collaborators Samuel L. Jackson and Tim Roth it’s hard to imagine the next Tarantino will be without something to enjoy.

Release Date: November 13

Pride-and-Prejudice-and-Zombies-First-Look

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

After a long time spent in development hell “Pride Prejudice and Zombies” based off the book, which takes most of the text of Jane Austen’s classic but ads in scenes of slaying the undead; looks to finally be coming in it’s full wacky glory. With a stellar cast including Game of Thrones’ Lena Headey and Charles Dance, Doctor who’s Matt Smith, Douglas Booth, Jack Huston, Sam Riley and more shows a promising, sure to be funny film that will be applicable and treat to a very wide number of genres and fans.

Release date: Uncertain, later in the year/ fall probably

Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Pt. 2

Throughout the past few years, “The Hunger Games” trilogy has been keeping audiences hungry for more; and while it may be our last trip to the dark world of Panem, the final film looks already to be an exciting conclusion to a satisfying and entertaining series. As the rebellion against the corrupt Capital grows, it looks as if the “girl on fire” Katniss everdeen will feel the heat from both her enemies, and her allies. From what I know of the books and what I’ve gathered from the movies, the people that she’s been with will begin to become more divided with her as they start to overthrow the capitol; all of which will come down to a hopefully thrilling finale, worthy of the series fame and popularity.

Release date: November 20th

ct-cth-star-wars-lightsaber-jpg-20141203

Star Wars Episode VII

While I have my own reservations on the film, I’d be a fool to deny it’s going to make a big impact around the world, and will probably generate enough money that J.J Abrams can swim scrooge mcduck style as his butler James Cameron waits on him. But aside from impact the movie has interesting promise and potential, with all the money and effort Disney has put into this film, and with the recent success of their other owned franchise, Marvel Comics, it seems very unlikely they are going to mess it up, and on a personal note, I can’t wait to indulge my inner child and return to the galaxy a galaxy far far away…

Things to Look Forward to in Philadelphia in 2015

January 15, 2015 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

It is no secret that Philadelphia is an exciting city. From the music scene to the historic district, the greasy cheesesteaks to the fine cuisine and the sophisticated orchestra to the rowdy sports fans, both tourists and residents are sure to stay entertained year-long.

With the return of “pop-up” city parks such as the Spruce Street Harbor, The New York Times says that Philadelphia is the “making of an urban outdoor oasis”. In addition, another park called Pier 68 will be opening along the Delaware River as a piece of the continually growing Delaware River Trail. This pier will include a spot for fishing, picnicking and a place for people to watch the tide rise and fall.

Along with the new outdoor spaces opening in Philadelphia, 2015 is an exciting year for artists and art-lovers alike. In late June, the Philadelphia Museum of Art will be opening a new Blockbuster Impressionism exhibit including works from Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley, Degas, Manet and other similar artists. The best part, however, is that every Sunday and Wednesday evening is a “pay what you want” day at the museum so even if you are pinched for money, you can enjoy this beautiful artwork.

Also, the Brandywine River Museum of Art is set to showcase work from the influential African American artist Horace Pippin from April to July.

Lastly, the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program is launching a new project entitled “Open Source” where local, national and international artists alike will turn ordinary locations into places with beautiful contemporary and street art.

In 2015, Philadelphia will be also celebrating many important anniversaries: Opera Philadelphia will celebrate it’s 40th anniversary, The Rosenbach (part of the Free Library of Philadelphia) will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland and the city will honor the 50th anniversary of one of the first gay rights protests. Along with these milestones will be celebrations, ceremonies and other special events happening in Philadelphia.

Along with these moments, the biggest event by far happening  in Philadelphia in 2015 is Pope Francis’ visit from September 22-27. He will be saying a public mass on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway for the 8th annual World Meeting of Families and is expected to draw almost 1.2 million people from around the world.

Along with these major events happening in Philadelphia, there are also a few rumors floating around such as Buddy Valastro, head baker of TLC’s “Cake Boss”, opening a store in Center City, a 1,000 foot waterslide in the summer and lots of new restaurants with fine dining.

However, even though all of these events are happening in Philadelphia and the NY Times named it the third top place to visit in 2015, what is the reality of the situation? Does Philadelphia really deserve the #3 spot? What’s a student’s perspective on this situation? Check back later this month to read SLA Media’s editorial on the topic!
