Culling Local Deer

January 3, 2014 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

Screen Shot 2013-03-11 at 8.53.42 PM

There is an overpopulation of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Pennsylvania.  A lack of natural predators in the state has allowed the population to go out of control, causing destruction of forests, crops, and causing car accidents. The forests of Pennsylvania cannot support this many deer, and it is causing a problem for the environment.

This wasn’t a problem a century ago. White-tailed deer were hunted nearly to extinction in the state. So why are there so many of them now? Many of the deer’s natural predators such as wolves and cougars have been pushed out of the state by hunters and destruction of their habitat. But the deer have adapted and thrive on farmland and even in urban areas like Philadelphia. Urban habitats offer protection from predators, and food. They can feed on crops and raid gardens.

An annual deer hunting season every autumn has helped control the populations in rural parts of the state, but what about in urban areas, like the city of Philadelphia? Hunting is illegal in the city, and as a result the deer populations in areas like fairmount park, Valley Forge, Pennypack park, and other places have gotten out of control. So these parks decided to have a deer cull.

The deer cull happens in winter. Hunters go into the woods at night, when  the parks are closed to the public. They use bows to kill deer in the park. The meat from the deer doesn’t go to waste, it is donated to homeless shelters, so it is eaten. This deer cull allows the population to be regulated. The Wissahickon park tries to keep the deer population down to thirty deer, which is a healthy number for the park to sustain, but the deer population is usually about 40-50 deer after the cull.

The killing of Philadelphia local deer has caused some controversy among people. While some people support the cull because of the believe in its environmental benefits and/or dislike deer raiding their gardens, spreading tics, and causing car accidents, others are against the slaughter of deer. Anti deer cull protests occur throughout the city, and elsewhere. They don’t believe that we humans should fulfill the role of the deer’s predator. But if we don’t, then what will?

Because we humans have eliminated the deer’s natural predators, Fairmount park has decided that we should fulfill the predatory role, and cull the local deer population in order to regulate it. This poses a controversy because an overpopulation of deer is bad for the local ecosystem, but some people are against the killing of our local deer. Urbanization has disrupted the natural balance of the local environment, the question is “should we as humans interfere to to try to fix it?”

Hype Over Scandal

January 2, 2014 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

Staff Writer: Dejah Harley

My friends and I always know we will love a show if the pilot episode is amazing. Sometimes they aren’t the best but when writers hit it out of the park with the first episode, you fall in love with the series. Scandal was no exception.

There is something about this show that just pulls you in. From the very first episode it is completely different from a lot of political shows you may have seen before.

The main character is Olivia Pope, an African American “fixer” in Washington, D.C. Her job is to essentially make politician’s scandals go away. An African American lead character in a powerful role is something very refreshing in television. Many times they aren’t reflected as much.

That is a reason why many African American women love the show so much. It reflects something, other than just the normal stereotype of loud, ignorant, and ghetto.

Olivia Pope, portrayed by Kerry Washington, is opinionated and bright. She uses her words and language as a way to make a point and show people that she is not someone to mess with.

Something that some found controversial in Scandal was not just Olivia Pope having an affair with the President but the fact that it was a black woman and a white man having an affair. That is something that Shonda Rhimes was skeptical writing about because she wasn’t sure how the viewers would react. However, no one has seemed to take offense to this. Many people are even saying they like this change of pace.

Everyone I seem to talk to about the show loves it. There is definitely a lot of hype for the show. However, I believe it’s justified. There is currently a season break, giving you enough time to go catch up on the show and get hooked!

Hallway Fashion- Ron Harper

Ron Outfit

Exactly what are you wearing today, and do you know where each item is from?

My top is from Gap, my jeans were from Gap, and my shoes were from designer that my mom got.

What are some of your favorite places to shop, or what are your favorite brands? Why?

My favorite places to shop is Gap because it has nice quality, I just ignore the fact they use child labor.

What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion is not anything you feel like is right, that is not fashion. Fashion is, just anything that fits the description of where you’re going and what you’re doing.

Do you consider yourself fashionable?

When I try.

How long does it usually take for you to pick out the outfit that you’re going to wear for the day and what’s your thought process as you pick out these clothes?

15-20 mins, and I try to match dark and dark, with light and light. That’s all .

Who/What do you get your fashion inspiration from?

 Probably my grandfather.

If you had to wear one outfit for the rest of your life what would it be?

Probably a short sleeve Henley with a denim pocket, blue Gap jeans, and some blue converses.

What’s your 1 dream outfit?

I’d have a Burberry trench coat, Versace sweater, the jeans don’t matter, and Louis Vuitton oxford shoes.

Caution: Choking Hazard- Sports Talk with the Straight Shuter

Tony Romo is king of the choke artists. Everyone knows that, for as long as I can remember, I have been hearing that Tony Romo is terrible in December, and that he is a terrible quarterback. But the question is, is he worth it? Is Tony Romo worth having as your quarterback, even if he can’t play in December?

Clearly, the Dallas Cowboys think that the answer to this question is yes, since they just re-signed Romo to a big deal, despite is wintertime woes. Many people respected that decision, claiming that if you consider the other quarterback options at that time, Romo is leaps and bounds ahead of the other options. However, even though Romo has had a good year, if you look at his quarterback rating (QBR), through the end of November, so not including December, he averages 57.1, which would rank him 18th in the NFL. Meanwhile Josh McCown and Nick Foles, who started the year as backup quarterbacks, have QBRs of 85.7 and 69.1.

McCown with 85.7 ranks first in the league, while Foles with 69.1 ranks sixth. Even Matt Cassel, who was shunned by the Chiefs, his ex-team, and was a free agent for anyone to sign has a QBR of 61.0 putting him in 13th in the league and ahead of Romo. This means that if the Cowboys signed Cassel in the offseason, instead of re-signing Romo, they would have a better quarterback. The most shocking thing to keep in mind is that, I did not include the month of December in Romo’s QBR, therefore this is from when Romo was still “a top QB”.

What I think to be the more important reason for Romo’s label as choke artist is his late game bad decisions, more than his December performance. In Romo’s career, entering the fourth quarter with the game either tied, or his team winning, Romo has seven interceptions. SEVEN! In the history of the NFL, no other quarterback has five.

Without a doubt Tony Romo has proven himself to be a choker. So now for the question. Is Tony Romo worth having even with his struggles? The answer, no. Romo is very expensive, and obviously he is not necessarily worth it either. One of the luxuries that an NFL team has is that it can cut it’s players at any time. So I think that if the cowboys cannot get to the playoffs this year, it is time to cut ties with Tony Romo. There are other options in the draft (Teddy Bridgewater, Johnny Manziel, Brett Hundley, etc.) and in free agency (Jay Cutler, Michael Vick, Josh McCown, Matt Cassel, etc.) or even trade (Kirk Cousins) so they don’t have to look far for a replacement.

The Take Away:

Because of Tony Romo’s struggles, the Dallas Cowboys lost to the Green Bay Packers after a huge lead in the first half of the game. Meanwhile their rivals the Philadelphia Eagles were beaten by the Minnesota Vikings. Therefore, if the Cowboys had won, then they would be in first place in the division, and be going to the playoffs. However since they didn’t, the Eagles are still very much alive and have a good shot of returning to the playoffs.

Some people say that the Cowboys still have a good shot at beating the Eagles week 17, which would send them to the playoffs. Don’t expect this to happen because Tony Romo never fails……..to fail.

Shuter’s Sleeper Pick:

Ryan Mathews (RB), San Diego Chargers

For the first time since his injury, Mathews has proven to me that he can handle a real workload and do a good job with it. This week he is playing the Oakland Raiders. These are the same Raiders that just got slaughtered by Jamaal Charles. So not only is their run defense TERRIBLE, but after the chargers go up by a good two to three touchdowns, I can see the chargers running off the clock, and Mathews will do the bulk of that running. Also look out for Danny Woodhead, he could see quite a few carries too.

My Love For Christmas

December 16, 2013 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

by: Dejah Harley

The second holiday that my family celebrates in this season is Christmas . This is definitely my favorite for sure.

Every Christmas Eve my parents would let my brother and I open up one gift a year. Each year we would somehow always pick the box that had pijamas in it. We would watch my parents faces as we grabbed the box to see if they were looking to say that that’s the big gift this year. I think they were just trying to trick us so that the gift big gift wasn’t spoiled

Christmas morning is where all the fun really happens. Every year my family holds a “christmas brunch”. It’s a restaurant theme so me and my brother are the waiters and everyone else are the “customers”. My mom and dad stay in the kitchen cooking breakfast food for everyone while my brother and I go around taking orders.

Now that I’m am a bit older this tradition is definitely something I really look forward to. Without the Christmas brunch it wouldn’t feel any different than a regular day.

“The food is my favorite part”, said Senior Briana Hicks

“Gifts aren’t that big of a deal to me anymore. It’s mainly the food. ” , said Senior Jonathan Spencer

It seems to be that for different families, Christmas isn’t always revolved around just religion but whatever small things that happen every year to make it special.
