Can Men Be Feminist? I Think So

January 11, 2016 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

Staff Writer Michaela Peterson

Feminism has long been associated with, well, women. But, recently, many famous men have publicly declared themselves feminists. From well-known social activists like Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, and Daniel Radcliffe, to more macho stars like  Bradley Cooper, Tom Hardy, and Channing Tatum, the men of Hollywood have started to speak openly about gender inequality in their work, supporting their  female co-star’s places and pay. Their actions have caused some  debate over whether or not men can truly call themselves feminists.

Just to make this clear, the definition of feminism, according to the Oxford English dictionary is: “The advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.”  Unfortunately, that’s not what a lot of people think it is. Many  assume  feminists are women who hate men and want to take away all of their rights. And this misunderstanding is what makes many men scared to call themselves feminists, even if their beliefs are in line with the true definition of feminism.

Think SLA is immune to this foolishness? When I began this article, I sent out an anonymous survey to the junior class. Since then I’ve only gotten nine responses, and only 2 men have responded. The thing is, both of the men who responded identified themselves as feminists. And I know plenty more men at SLA who identify as feminists. Yet finding someone to interview for this article, which was the original plan, was basically impossible. The guys I spoke to about this skirted around the issue, trying to find a way out of it.

I’m curious as to why that is. What is it about the word “feminism” that makes people, especially men, uncomfortable?

They are more than comfortable talking about the ideas, but under terms like “egalitarianism” or “equal rights”. As soon as the word feminism comes into play, the air becomes filled with an awkward tension. It’s possible that they think that other feminists think that they can’t fight with them; it could be for a completely different reason. I can’t say.

If it is the first reason, however, then men have no reason to fear. The vast majority of women feminists openly welcome men feminists. It would be hypocritical of us to reject men from joining this movement about equality. Everyone I’ve asked and who have filled out the survey agree: there is no reason why men can’t be feminists. You may not be the most active or loud feminist, but, in the end, all that matters is that you stand behind and act on your beliefs.
To be a feminist, if you are a man, simply means you are actively supporting, listening, and encouraging women in your life. If you are out with your friends and one of them says something sexist, call them on it. Listen to the girls in your class talk about everyday sexism. Ask one of them what their experiences with casual sexism has been. Doing any of those things makes you a feminist. To be feminist doesn’t mean that you are going to rallies and rejecting all concepts of masculinity. To be feminist means standing behind women and lifting them up. And in that process, you are helping yourselves. Women are 50% of the population. How can we say we are advanced as a society when half of us don’t get paid fairly or have rights to our own bodies? That’s really what we are fighting for. We are fighting to move forward in the world, while fighting to not move backwards.

Advisory Houses 2016 Update

January 11, 2016 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

Staff Writer: Dylan McKeon

The SLA House System was established at the start of the year by senior Joie Nearn for her Capstone, in an attempt to bring more school spirit to SLA. However after the first two house meeting, the advisory memo has been absent of new house events or meeting. I sat down with Joie Nearn to ask about how the project is going so far and how she hopes to continue.

When asked about her feelings on how the House System, Joie is pleased with how it’s working so far.

“I’m really happy with how interested people are in it and I feel it is a great way to implement school spirit”.

The House System has not had any events recently, but Joie promises that will change soon. “My original plan was to have a meeting/event every month but their were a lot of problems.” she mentioned. “The biggest problem is finding a location that can hold everyone” she recalled “I’m also trying to get the Beeber campus involved which is also proving difficult.

However there is also a lack of support from some of the students who are uninterested in the house system.

“I don’t think anyone really cares about the houses anymore,” one senior says when asked about the project “a lot of people have forgotten about it and it wasn’t popular when it started”.

Joie has recognized this lack of support and is disappointed in the reactions some students have for the project. “I feel that we should have some more support from the upper classmen” Joie remarks “I feel that it would make things a lot easier and make for more school spirit”.

Despite this Joie is determined to press on and is hoping to bring more interest to the project in 2016 . “I am hoping to start some new events at the start of 2016, if all goes well we should get another dance or competition.”

Their was a similar project done back in the 2011-2012 school year, which was implemented by the SLA staff. However they ended up doing little with it and it ended by the next year.

“My hope is to find a student involved in this project now to carry on this project for next year” she mentions.

Trump, Our New President?!

Donald Trump as president. You have got to be kidding right?!

This is what I first thought, but it seems to be true. There are plenty of american citizens that are willing to vote for Trump.  Many of his positions appeal to American citizens, but there are other statements he has made that bother a lot of Americans.

Take Trump’s first commercial. Here are the big points that he made:

  1. He wants to “temporarily” muslims from entering the U.S
  2. Has plans to “decapitate” the Islamic state
  3. Plans on building a physical wall on the Southern border that Mexico has to pay for

I look at this and think it is crazy. I understand he wants to get rid of ISIS, but why attack muslims as a whole when the vast majority of them are not  involved with ISIS? To add on the shutdown of Muslims entering the United States is absurd. Many Muslims in war-torn countries like Libya, Egypt, Iraq, and Siberia are suffering at the moments and come to the U.S to seek help from us. Taking that away would be like taking their lives away due to the fact that Muslims are not safe where they are now.

Finally, building a wall on the Southern border is the most ridiculous idea ever. Not only that, but Mexico have to pay for that wall to be built, the wall he wants to build. A wall is definitely not going to stop immigrants from traveling in the U.S. if El Chapo, one of the most known drug lords in Mexico, had the ability to escape out of prison through a tunnel,  imagine the way immigrants would get in. (Which is saying alot considering that most of the tunnels El Chapo built still have yet to be discovered.)

My problems with Trump do not end with the ad. The next issue is that there is a very recent “feud” between Samuel Jackson and Trump. Trump signed Jackson up for a golf club which he did not know until he got a bill for golfing at the club. Trump went as far as to say that he barely knew anything about Jackson and he did not recall playing golf or even hanging out with Jackson. That was when Anthony Anderson (another actor) came to the defence and said that Trump lied, that at some point in time the three of them have gone golfing before. Many other political figures defend Jackson saying that Trump does indeed know him. Trump actually continues to communicate with Jackson in attempts to “hang out” with him. We all know and have seen that Trump likes to attack, and that he hold grudges against all kinds of people.

Jackson was not the only one who has been attacked by Trump. He continuously attacks fellow Republican candidate Ted Cruz. Trump  recently went as far as to tell CNN News that Cruz should ask a  judge if it is ok for him to run for president due to the fact that he was born in Canada and it might create a big problem. Then he goes as far as to say the following; “I do like Ted Cruz, but not a lot of evangelicals come out of Cuba.”.

Trump’s behavior continues make people question him as not only a presidential candidate, but also a person. Looking at all of the drama he has brought to the political table, how could people actually want him as a president? I understand that he has a few good plans for the country, such as helping the country get out of debt (he has recovered from past debt situations), and keeping Medicare and Social Security untouched, but when you look at the overall image, it is not a really nice thing. I certainly don’t want Trump as president.

Microsoft, Google, and Apple: The Ultimate Opinion

January 6, 2016 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

Kwan Hopkins

Guest Writer

“Facetime me later”

“iMessage me tonight”

“Just Google the answer”

“My email is RomneyLover123@gmail.com”

Oh enough already! I just can’t believe that someone could say all of these things. Oh I’m not saying technology is being overused. If anything it isn’t being used enough. What I’m trying to say is I don’t understand why people use these services. Facetime and iMessage: made by Apple. Google and Gmail: It’s obvious who made these. Two companies who make subpar products and guess who still buys them. The majority of the world. The ignorant consumer who doesn’t care enough to look at the facts. Microsoft is a better company, makes better products and I’m going to tell you why.

It was the summer after sixth grade when I realized that Microsoft was the company that should be dominant in Silicon Valley. In sixth grade everyone was starting to care about phones. Everyone was starting to really care about them. I wanted one so bad and I was the only one in my group of friends who had a “TracFone”. So what did I do? I started to beg my mother for a phone. Of course she said no but that didn’t stop me from comparing the prices. It didn’t stop me from comparing the hardware. It didn’t stop me from thinking about the overall experience that I would have when it came to getting a phone. Windows Phone was the winner in all of those categories. So then I went into comparing other things: computers, software, etc. This is where I learned about Microsoft and where my “obsession” began.

I started to say things in the class in 7th grade like “You know Microsoft was founded April 4th, 1975”. It was really annoying and really funny at the same time. So then I started to tell people random facts about Windows, Microsoft and Bill Gates. This is when I really started to commit to Microsoft. I would say things like:

“I just think that your iPhone isn’t as good as the Microsoft Lumia”

“How dare you say the Galaxy Tab is better than the Surface”

“Here are the facts!”

But people don’t realize these things. People don’t know that everything Microsoft creates is superior to it’s competitors’. I asked a student about themselves and their personal preference. Here’s what that student to say:

Kwan Hopkins: What’s your preference when it comes to technology.

Chloe Hart: With phones I prefer iPhones because that’s what I know how to work

Kwan Hopkins: How are you with tablets?

Chloe Hart: I prefer an iPad.

Kwan Hopkins: Now when it comes to computers you’re definitely not a Chromebook type of girl.

Chloe Hart: I hate Chromebooks. I’d prefer using a PC.

Kwan Hopkins: Now what if I told you there was something 50% faster and more powerful than a Macbook Air and it was also a tablet at the same time.

Chloe Hart: I’d be intrigued.

Kwan Hopkins: Now you know what that’s called?

Chloe Hart: Surface Pro?

Kwan Hopkins: Yes! Surface Pro 4! Let me tell you about it: It has beautiful resolution, it runs games, Steam, everything that a desktop can run. But it’s also a tablet. It’s the tablet that can replace your laptop. What I’m trying to tell you is that there are other things out there.

Chloe Hart: I know.

Kwan Hopkins: Why do you think you like iPhones?

Chloe Hart: My brother has one, my dad has one.

Kwan Hopkins: Well let me tell you why I hate iPhones. They never change when a new one comes out. They get a little bigger, they get a little thinner, they have the same 8 megapixel camera. They might get a get a few new features but other than the things listed, they never change. Now there’s one more fact that I’d like to share with you: 98% of people would recommend the Surface Pro 3 to be used by their friends and loved ones. Now if that many people would want the people who they love most to use this product, it obviously a great line of products.

Chloe Hart: Tell that to my parents. I’m not oblivious, I know that things like this are out there, I just don’t have access to them.

Now after I presented Ms. Hart with the facts she could do nothing more than agree to the things I was saying. She agreed with me about iPhones never really changing, she agreed with using a PC over any other computing OS, she agreed that the Surface has to be a great product. I just want people to know that you don’t have to be so mainstream. Chloe seemed to only like iPhones because she’s never experience a Windows Phone because her brother and father have one. They pay for something that isn’t worth what they’re paying for. Chloe even went so far as to say she “hated” Chromebooks. What people need to understand is that there are better things out there, things that are actually worth paying hundreds or thousands of dollars to buy.

But I’m giving SLA a break. SLA used to be an Apple School and now it’s a Google school. There was a shift that caused a select few to probably go from Apple products to at least some kind of Android or Google product for better functionality at the school they they spend 8-9 hours at everyday getting work done. But SLA has never had a Microsoft era. A Windows era. Not only would they see the amazing abilities that Windows has but they would see the amazing things that they could do. And I feel this shift among the student here at SLA is causing some sort of divide. I think we should just have one operating system, and that operating system should be Windows.

And with that all of that being said, I can only end this article one way: When you don’t take the time to research the products that you spend your money on you’ll end up being screwed out of something better. Just take your time and really learn about something before you buy it. And I really encourage you to take the time to try out any kind of new Microsoft product. I assure you that it’s totally worth it.

Star Wars Episode VII: A Phantom Menace or a New Hope?

Sean Morris

Staff writer and editor

So, here it is. The review we’ve all been waiting for.r.  After the last few years of speculation  and feverish anticipation, I can say with confidence that the newest installment of the Star Wars movie franchise, the force awakens, is an enjoyable one- but with several faults. Interestingly, my feelings about these faults differ greatly from what many people at SLA feel about it- which puts me in the unique position of being the film’s review with some of the more negative thoughts on it. I’ll tread carefully to insure a major spoiler-free review.

To begin with the positives; this movie was a big treat in terms of throwbacks and references to the previous movies and plenty of eye winks that can appeal to occasional or die hard fans. This film also mastered comedy very well, better probably than any of the other movies and definitely played with some of the more common jokes in the star wars movies. The cast all did their jobs phenomenally- especially the leading protagonist of Daisy Ridley as Rey, who has become one of my new favorite characters within Star Wars and defiantly has a long bright career ahead of her. John Boyega was also solid as a reformed stormtrooper and had several good moments, bringing in most of the story’s comedy. Part of the fun also goes to the incredibly handsome Oscar Isaac’s charming portrayal of Poe Dameron that makes him infectiously likeable.

But it wasn’t only the new stars that stole the show as Harrison ford’s return as Han Solo was utterly wonderful and provided some of the best scenes and heart of the film.  From the returning characters like Carrie Fisher’s feisty former Princess Leia, Chewbacca, C-3po and more all make trumpet returns to the saga that immortalized them. The special effects were outstanding- even more so when you realize many elements were captured through real-life animatronics rather than CGI.

Now, some of the things I didn’t like. I felt that the recycled plot elements from “A New Hope” took away from the “new” aspect the movie was promising and gives me some worries as to how they will handle future projects. The mysterious big bad- Supreme Leader Snoke- was also not very exceptional. For all the secrecy about his appearance, he was not even intresting looking and, so far, a bland, motivationless appearing villain- with a quite frankly TERRIBLE villain name. I mean, Snoke? What are you, a dolphin or something? While he still probably has at least another one or two movies to prove his potential, there were a number of ways they could have made a lasting impression in his first appearance that they did not. One character made a departure in this movie as well.  I was not happy with how they handled his or her leave, although telling more about this would MASSIVELY spoil the plot. And another character that was hyped in promotional material was little used, and when used wasn’t being very effective.

When compared to the previously crafted worlds of the comics and books that took place after “Return of the Jedi”  these new movies (that replace this, cannon wise)  haven’t even met some of the originality and characters that they had.  And I will say that they had more than one opportunity to make references to that particular mythology or include it somehow, but they straight up did not, which felt like a massive slap in the face to those who loved read and knew about those . I will try to cover some of this in a more spoiler filled thoughts on the movie.

Overall, the Force Awakens is the biggest film of the year, possibly of all time, but that doesn’t make it the best. It was an enjoyable picture that deserves acclaim for doing what many thought would be impossible. In the words of Lucille Bluth, I encourage everyone to “Go see a Star War”.
