When Does Cultural Appropriation Cross the Line

Miley Cyrus at VMAs                                             Savannah Manns                         Angelica Owens

Every single young, African-American young female has had at least one moment in life when they hated their natural hair. Whether the self-hatred roots from media, school, or even their own family; it happens one way or another. At a young age our impressionable minds absorb everything, we are taught that natural hair isn’t beautiful. We are teased, taunted, and ridiculed. But, what happens when our natural hairstyles are worn by another race? They are glorified for being “hip” and “trendy.” Why the difference in attitudes?

Cultural appropriation places everyone in a tricky position. The ones who are appropriated cannot wrap their minds around it due to the incessant abhorrence we’ve endured because of an aspect of our culture. Our culture is only glorified when it is worn by someone else, specifically white people. As for people who are doing the appropriation; some of them ask: why is it big deal? This is America, and we are supposed to embrace different cultures because we’re a melting pot. But, there is a fine line between appreciation and appropriating.

To see how SLA feels on the subject, I spoke to a couple of African American students. I spoke to Sophomore Savannah Manns expressed her problem with white people wearing historically black hair. ¨For dreads, twists and braids specifically; they are protective styles for our hair type. I feel as though whenever black people have or do something creative and makes us individuals; it’s just stripped away from us. We can’t have anything to ourselves; everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon.”

Other students at SLA have a different perspective. Sophomore Joseph Lee does not have a problem with it. ¨It is just hair. It means nothing to me; there’s no significance.”

In September, singer Miley Cyrus decided to ¨rock¨ her faux locs during the VMAs. She constantly used AAVE (African American Vernacular English), called rapper, Snoop Dogg ¨mammy¨ (mention how that’s inappropriate). It is obvious she loves our culture and would like to mimic us. Yet, when singer Nicki Minaj speaks about the racism in award shows, Cyrus  portrays her as being bitter and angry. She dismissed the fact that her whole rant was about the blatant racism in the media. Cyrus decided to silence her and cover up her actual problem. This is a prime example of why black people (women especially) as a whole feel offended when others attempt to make our culture a costume.

It’s not just hair; this is our identity, this is our culture. You can’t pick out the aspects that are appealing to you and then pretend to be oblivious about the struggle that comes with it. If you want to be apart of our culture; take everything that comes with being a black person in America. You have the privilege of putting on a facade for one day or however long your phase is; but we are always going to be black; there’s no escaping that.

Think of it this way: one day in class, you’re assigned to do a paper. You put your heart and soul in it, you believe it’s a remarkable piece and you’re thrilled to share it with your professor. He hates it, he ridicules it; says it’s the worst thing he has ever read. He gives you a failing grade. You’re distraught because you thought it would be a wonderful piece and he would love it. Years later, you find out he took your paper that you worked on; without even any recognition that it was your original piece. He profits off of your paper, people praise him for his innovative thinking and style; whereas a few years before he berated it.

Personally, I would not have a problem with us sharing our culture if we weren’t brainwashed to despise our identity because it did not fit the Eurocentric standards. There would be no problem if white people loved black people as much as they love our culture. It is not fair for young black girls (and boys) have self-hatred drilled into their minds before they even have a chance to realize how beautiful they are. Then, when they grow older they finally do see their features are beautiful to most of the Western Civilization; only if another race acquires it.

I have seen a bunch of buzz floating around all over social media these past few weeks on a highly anticipated movie–and it doesn’t come out until August 5th, 2016. Suicide Squad A movie following the perspective of the the major villains of DC Comics which are being imprisoned by the U.S Government. The members of the Suicide Squad are required to complete a secret government mission that will most likely result in their deaths (which is why they call the movie Suicide Squad).

Now, this movie has been raved about ever since it was rumoured that Warner Bros. was going to make it, and now that productions have been officially wrapped up fans are more ecstatic than ever. Why all the hype? I decided to do a little research.

More so people are excited to see the new character designs, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) being the most loved by fans. People such as The Chapman Sisters (owners of Real Techniques), and Alexa Poletti (cosplay Youtuber).

With the new hype on Harley Quinn’s design, Mykie (a.k.a Glam and Gore on Youtube, Beauty Vlogger of the Year, and winner of the NYX Face Awards) has managed to trick the internet with a cosplay tutorial of Harley.

So, will it be a hit or miss? Hollywood has managed to make great movies out of books such as The Divergent series, The Fault In Our Stars, The Hunger Games series, and others. Then there are movies such as Beautiful Creatures, The Mortal Instruments, Percy Jackson series that have disappointed fans.

Junior Brandon Jones is one of the SLA students who is a fan of the series and is excited about the movie. He answered a few questions about the project.

SLAMedia: How big of a fan are you towards Suicide Squad?

Jones: I’m knowledgeable about the comic but I wouldn’t say I’m a fan because I don’t read it much. However I am excited for the movie.

SLAMedia: As a “fan” of this movie do you think this is overhyped or not?why?

Jones: As for it being over hyped I would actually go as far to say that it is underhyped because not many people know about Suicide Squad and I think that the actors and actresses they chose to portray the characters will do a good job as far as bringing people to know the Suicide Squad.

SLAMedia: What are you most excited for?

Jones: I’m most excited for deadshot, Amanda Waller, the Joker and Harley Quinn and how they’ll be portrayed.

SLAMedia: Like all Hollywood movies that are based upon books and comics what do you expect from this movie, will it be a hit or miss?

Jones: I feel as though it will be a bit because I stated before, the actors they chose are very talented.

SLAMedia: Will you like a ton of others fans be watching this movie in theaters on opening night or will you watch it another day in theaters, or buy the DVD?

Jones: I will definitely be seeing it in theaters.

This movie is expected to be a hit, with a great cast to portray every character. However, even if it does turn out terrible, people will still fill theaters to see for themselves.

As for what the actual turnout will be, we will have to wait until next summer to find out.

Why The Philadelphia Eagles Will Be A Playoff Team

October 8, 2015 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

Micah Henry

Philadelphia-Eagles-Huddle

“Ugly” would be a compliment for the Philadelphia Eagles right now, especially after their 20-10 loss to the rival Cowboys on September 20th, in week two of the 2015 regular season. The offense was non existent, almost literally. In total, the Eagles managed seven total rushing yards. Seven. Sam Bradford being the leading rusher with 9 yards from two carries. Demarco Murray rushed for a mind bending two yards, Darren Sproles was a bother with -4 yards to his name, and Ryan Matthews amassed a staggering zero yards. It is easy to blame the running backs for this pathetic display, but the talent is there. Demarco Murray was the league’s leading rusher last year with 392 attempts along with a staggering 1,845 rushing yards and 13 TD’s. Ryan Mathews was the starting running back of the San Diego Chargers, when healthy, with his best season coming in 2013 when he rushed for 1,255 yards and earned 6 TD’s. With the lighting quick Darren Sproles being the glimpse of light you manage to see every once in awhile until he is in the end zone, a powerful offensive weapon.

Sam bradford played averagely, going 23/37 with 224 yards and one TD but two interceptions. The defense played pretty well, this being disguised by the offense’s performance. They totaled 64 tackles, three sacks, and six tackles for loss, with the secondary playing a solid game as well. A little more offense and the Eagles take the game.

So what is the problem? The offensive line is. An offensive line is a link that must work as one person. If one person in the link is off, the rest of the links will fall off and overall, bad things happen. Specific examples of these bad things was shown vividly against the Cowboys. The offensive lines were making no holes for the runners and were not blocking well, it was a horrible performance. The offensive line not flowing resulted in the running game not working, which resulted in a passing game being predictable, which resulted in a poor passing game, from a bad rushing game and ultimately millions of eagles fans covering their faces.

At this point you are probably thinking, there is no way this team is Super Bowl material. Yet there is hope for many reasons. Here are three:

One, the Eagles are 0-2. That’s not good thing off the bat, but let’s look at the history. In 1990, the Eagles started 0-2 and finished 10-6 and made the postseason. Similarly, in 2003 the eagles started 0-2 and finished 12-4 and also made the playoffs. As George Santayana said, “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” The Eagles understand they have to win, they understand this franchise was in this position before and they will overcome.

Two, the Eagles only have one problem to fix. The offensive line which factored into every other of the Eagles aspects of that game. As previously touched upon, if the offensive line isn’t working the QB will feel pressure then he will make bad decisions or get sacked. This then resulting in the WR’s not getting passes and when they do, they probably won’t be good catches or much yardage after the catch. As a result of all this, the offense then is not on the field for a very long time, obviously meaning we score less. Beyond that, the defense then plays the majority of the game and gets fatigued, resulting in the other team doing better. The eagles wrote the recipe for losing in the NFL vs. the Cowboys that sunday, and it all starts with a solid offensive line.

Three, the Eagles just won 24-17 this past Sunday vs. the Jets. Playing a great offensive game, specifically in the first half. The Eagles have been a half game team this year. Shockingly, the Eagles have been outscored 39-3 in the first half and in the second have have tried coming out firing to no avail and ultimately earning a loss. However in this win, the offense showed its potential. This shows however, that the Eagles are capable of winning and can win if they play a full game.

This is essentially a rebuilding year for the Philadelphia Eagles. There is a new QB, mostly young WR, a young TE, two new RB, new offensive line members and almost an entirely new secondary and linebackers. This Eagles team is brand new, fresh out of the box. It takes a while to break in some new sneakers, even if these sneakers are some of the nicest looking sneakers you have ever seen, it takes time. The Eagles have plentiful talent and that has shown on defense as well as occasionally on offense. There is no need to panic in Philadelphia. For even if this year turns out not be as successful predicted, the future is bright for the organization. However the Eagles will find a way to get it going, and they will make the playoffs. The talent will click and this team will be a forced to be reckoned with, fear the birds.

Phillies Free Agency: Who will the Philadelphia Phillies Most LIkely SIgn?

October 5, 2015 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

Aaron Watson-Sharer

The Philadelphia Phillies are pretty bad. The Phillies have just completed their worst season since 1969. Even worst, is that year the Mets went on to win the world series. They sit dead last in the standings in the Major Leagues and they soon will draft first in the 2016 MLB First Year Player Draft. The Phillies have had a very forgettable 2015, but the future remains bright with a great farm system.

As hitters, the Phillies are near the bottom in all batting categories. Ranking 24th in batting average at .249 is nothing but poor. Not to mention the .303 on base percentage, second to last in baseball. The Phillies also currently sit 27th in runs scored, just ahead of the White Sox, Braves and the Marlins, respectively. There is no hitting stat where the Phillies rank anywhere near the top in the league. The Phillies currently don’t possess a feared hitter in their lineup but one can be found in the offseason.

The Phillies are amongst the bottom in pitching as well. The Phillies are doing so poorly on the mound that former Phillie Cole Hamels is still tied in wins. Of all eligible starting pitchers in Philadelphia, Aaron Harang somehow leads with a 4.86 ERA. On most clubs, that earned run average sends you to the minors. The Phillies through 152 games are 29th in earned run average. The Phillies only had 66 quality starts in 2015 In baseball, a quality start means they pitched six innings and only allowed up to three runs. The only team that is below them in most categories for pitching is the Rockies, who play in high altitude which leads to a great park for hitters. The Phillies could look this year to add to their rotation, or may put it on hold until they are able to contend, either way, something has got to be done.

So who should the Phillies sign next year?

They won’t just go for the big name players. There are some who would never join us. David Price is an example. There are some veterans who are aging who want to contend. They may just sign veterans just to trade them to a top bidder. Next year we won’t contend, so our options are very limited.

But here are a few players that would be worth it:

G Fuime, Getty Images
Courtesy of G Fuime, Getty Images
  • RHP Doug Fister: It was expected that Doug Fister would have a great year. He has since been moved to the bullpen on a competitive Nationals’ rotation. Doug Fister is going to be 32 on opening day and the Phillies have signed veterans like Fister on one year deals. Fister needs to prove that he can still be the quality starter he was in Detroit. Why not pitch for Philadelphia for a season?
  • RHP Alfredo Simon: Alfredo Simon, 35, has had a tough year. Twenty nine starts with a 5.05 ERA. His WHIP has risen drastically this year to 1.439. Alfredo Simon can be a starter or a reliever, he has been a reliever in the past and excelled. Alfredo Simon spent three seasons in the National League with the Reds. He was an All Star in 2014 and was a great starter in the National League. He carried a 3.44 ERA and a 15-10 record. He could be a very good pitcher back in the National League and the Phillies use him to eat up innings.
  • RHP Ian Kennedy: Ian is only 31 and has had a tough year, but with the Phillies, he could spend a year or two while we rebuild our rotation. Ian Kennedy carried a 4.28 ERA in 2015. Kennedy has plenty of potential and some believe he still could have a sub three ERA for any team. If the Phillies get something like that out of him, they could easily trade him in July and push the rebuild.

  • LHP Wei-Yin Chen: I would love to see the Phillies pursue Chen heavily. He isn’t the lackluster veteran like Aaron Harang. Chen has been a quality starter since he signed from Taiwan. This season, Chen has a 3.34 ERA in 2015. He has a quality strikeout rate above seven. He also walks very few batters, about 1.9 batters per nine innings. That’s a great number. Wei-Yin Chen has the potential of a long term starter in Philadelphia and would perform at a very high level.
  • RHP Mike Leake: Mike Leake is young and talented. That’s all we need. He wouldn’t be cheap to pry, could be about $15 million dollars a year. He has the number 2 or 3 starter potential and has proved that year on end. The Phillies young pitcher Aaron Nola was often compared to Mike Leake while at LSU. He and Nola also made their debut the year after they were drafted. Mike Leake is a winning pitcher, and the Phillies will start winning in a couple years and if we sign Leake he will be apart of that.
  • CF Dexter Fowler Jr.: Dexter Fowler is a proven talent with superior glove work in centerfield. He has a .267 lifetime batting average and hits for contact and power. So far in 2015, he has 17 home runs. The Cubs will likely let him walk with all of their young and talented outfielders. Fowler is a power hitting center fielder who has great speed. That makes him a premier hitter in this league and would contribute in Philly.

  • LF Justin Upton: Justin Upton is a great fit in Philly. No way we don’t pursue him for at least a five year deal. Upton doesn’t always hit for average, he will never have that .300 average. Instead, Upton hits for power, 26 home runs, and consistency is in his name. His glove is superior, as you can see in this instance. Justin Upton is a top 50 player in baseball and would be in the heart of our lineup until he’s 35.

Billy Hurst, Associated Press
Courtesy of Billy Hurst, Associated Press
  • RF Jason Heyward: Jason Heyward is an MLB superstar. Once heralded as the consensus top prospect in all of baseball, he’s handling the hype well. He has only hit for 20 home runs in a season once, but that’s ok because he hits for average. His batting average sits at .293, he has shown yet again he is a top outfielder in baseball. A near five-tool player, who hardly strikes out. He only has 90 strikeouts to date and every team would envy having to play him. Plus, he’s 26 years old, a perfect age for the Phillies to build upon.

The Phillies last year reached a TV deal with Comcast and have all the money they need for the players they want. The Phillies have needs everywhere besides the few players who are playing their way into a long term starter; like Aaron Nola or Maikel Franco. This is the year to get a superstar free agent, because they will have adapted to the team by the time we contend. Andy Macphail, a baseball executive for the Phillies, has shown that he will make a bold move if the potential is great. Don’t forget he traded Erik Bedard for five players, which included Chris Tillman and Adam Jones. There are eight can’t miss free agents this year we should make a run for, we just have to put our faith in Macphail to pursue them.

The Phillies future is bright. One of the finest farm systems and with some young talent who will make the Phillies return to October. My personal predictions is that we pursue all of these guys but end up with Justin Upton and Alfredo Simon. Simon could help in 2016 while Upton would be at the heart of the lineup for at least six years. There are plenty of free agent options, but these are the best fits for the Phillies right now. We won’t get the next ace this winter, but we’ll find players who will contribute to the success of the Phillies.

Combatting Stress at SLA

October 5, 2015 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

Arielle Moore

Staff Writer

It’s one-thirty in the morning and you’re still up writing that essay for your History class, but the time doesn’t even phase you. Aah, good ol’ benchmark season and your teachers were not the slightest bit generous this year. Ever since school began, you’ve been moody, tired, antisocial, and irritable. These are symptoms of stress; the one word that affects us high-schoolers the most.

But why is that? What causes all of this stress in teens?

“Receiving school work I don’t know how to complete even after asking the teacher about it causes me stress,” says sophomore Siani Davis. “It affects my attitude towards my friends and generally how I feel throughout the day.”

At SLA, stress also has a four year course. Many upperclassmen say that their stress comes from more specific areas, such as standards and college applications. “Tests stress me out the most,” agrees junior Vaughn Matthews.

A universal stress factor among students of all grades is the amount of schoolwork they receive. SLA mentor and advisor Zoe Siswick says: “Students have a high level of stress at times, but in some sense it’s also kind of stress free. They don’t have a ton of responsibilities outside of making sure you’re getting your schoolwork done. The amounts of stress in students sort of ebb and flow depending on the time of year.”

So from hearing all that, you’re probably wondering how you can get rid of this wretched stress immediately. Well, I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that while you’re in high school, the chances of you completely obliterating the stress you feel are slim to none. The good news is that there are some easy and quite effective ways to relieve it. After doing some research, I’ve found some ways to lower your stress levels and help you to breathe a bit easier, even with a huge speech due tomorrow.

Sleep

Yes, another S word, and one that seems even scarier than ‘stress’. To this day, most high-schoolers don’t even know how to successfully get a full eight-hours; it’s usually a five-hour rest with a series of broken up three-hour after school crashes on the couch. We’ve all been there, having our sleep schedule being brutally slaughtered during the summer and having no way to resurrect it once school starts. It’s a struggle to try and fall asleep (and stay asleep) but I urge you, please do it! Sleeping is vital to your health, and it also makes you feel great when you do. Try turning off your phone fifteen or so minutes before bed, to ease the temptation to use it later on. It really does help and the final result is incredibly rewarding, trust me.

Diet

I know, I know, another opportunity for me to sound like your doctor. “A healthy diet and excercise…”. Bleh. I would totally eat a bag of pretzels over an orange any day for a snack. And honey, do it! Don’t skip that 6-pack of oreos to scarf down a head of lettuce. But make sure you’re lessening the amounts of unhealthy foods you eat, and increasing the amounts of healthy ones. Also, make sure you eat a filling breakfast. Eating in the morning, like so many people, makes me feel sick but I have to at least have a banana or a granola bar to start my day. It’s so helpful and it makes you feel great later on, it also keeps your stomach from doing the rumblies before you realize you have late lunch that day.

Manage

Organization is key to having a cleanly and neat life. Managing your time, working space, and even supplies will help you feel more on top of things. I know when everything is in its place I feel a sense of calmness even in a chaotic situation. Keeping a planner is a great way to remember what you have to do and it helps to distribute your time thoroughly for each assignment that you’re required to do.

Fun!

Maintaining a healthy social life is a great way to A. remain sane, and B. enjoy your teen years! I know being social isn’t for everybody (I didn’t forget you, introverts) but you should make sure that you are constantly making time for fun in your life. Like what I’ve said for many of the items on this list, they definitely aren’t easy to do, but they are very worth it. Got a big test coming up? Of course study and make sure you fully understand the material, but don’t let it consume you! Watch a movie, draw; do something that’s therapeutic to you at least once a week.

Stress is a huge part of your high school years, but it’s up to you to determine how it will affect you. Yes, you may have one week to turn a C into a B, but don’t let that be something that you lose sleep over. Understand that school is a very important part of your life and future, but keep in mind that your health is something you should value a lot more. So remember, turn off Instagram a few minutes earlier tonight, drink a few more cups of water, hang out with some friends this weekend, and j u s t  b r e a t h e.
