Popecation: An Analysis Thereof

Thank God! We are all getting out of school this Tuesday due to a rare, once in a lifetime chance, due to Pope Francis coming to Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families. We will have what Ms. Pahomov calls a “Pope-cation” and what some have dubbed a “Pope-pocalypse.” The city will be mobbed with an assumed 1.5 million tourists coming into the city. Many citizens however are leaving this city for a short vacation during the time off. How though, will people be able to get back to school in time for school to start again on Monday? Principal Gerwer only gives us a 10% chance of having school then.

Well, we couldn’t get to school on Monday as school would be closed then for the Pope. The school district of Philadelphia closed schools then because they assumed that the Ben Franklin Parkway would still be clogged and Septa was officially not running. We had the day off to just do whatever we felt like, and many of us enjoyed that time. However then came the opposite of a silver lining, the day that we would have off, would be taken away from our spring break. Was that fair to us?

To find out, I went around asking  people their opinion.

“No I didn’t have much fun at all, I was bored. And the fact they took one of our spring break days was even worse.” Sophomore Sam Dennis lamented.

Sophomore, CJ Irwin-Diehl said: “I did have fun, you know, spending time with my friends and hanging out but I don’t think it was worth it to take a day off our spring break because we have like, no days off in March and April.”

I didn’t have to go much further, the consensus was quite clear that people didn’t have that much fun, and to get a day taken off our spring break was not worth it.

Unfortunately, that’s history! The Pope came and went, the city went on lock down for 5 days, and we all got an extra day off. People wish they had more fun and did not seem to have much enthusiasm for the Pope’s presence, but that can’t be changed. Maybe in the future the School District would be more considerate with our days off, and we might find ways to entertain ourselves.

Orange Is The New Black Recap

June 8, 2015 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

If you tune in to any conversation between students at SLA, you will mostly find yourself listening to some talk about movies and tv shows. Scandal, Once Upon A Time, Arrow, Walking Dead, Agents of Shield, and Attack on Titans– students here have a wide range of tastes. But there’s one show that has hit it big with most students: Orange Is The New Black. Those who enjoy the tv show would comment about the crazy shenanigans and problems the characters do and get into. The outrageous jokes as well as just the plot in general. For the past year fans have been on a cliffhanger and have been waiting for what seems like forever for June 12th, so they can continue the story and see what happens in season three. Before you watch season 3, it best to catch up on the past seasons and maybe just read this for a recap of the most memorable things that happened. To prepare for this article, I tried reading episode summaries and picking out the most important parts, but you cannot simply sum up 26 episodes in one article and keep it interesting. Also doing so takes the opportunity to witness it all over again. Instead, here are two that I feel are the most memorable moments of the past two seasons that shows why this show is so interesting and should be watched by all: One of my favorite moments of Orange Is The New Black Season 1 was when Crazy Eyes was Piper denied her a relationship, and eventually told her off So she decides to get up in the middle of the night and walk to Piper’s bunk and pee on the floor while keeping eye contact with the awoken Piper. My second favorite moment of Orange Is The New Black is a scene close to the cliffhanger of season two when Vee is ran over by the van, which is being driven by Rosa who escaped the prison as well. A look into season 3 is what all fans of Orange Is The New Black want right now with June 12th approaching fast. There is said to be more characters, a possibility of Larry no longer appearing. Also Alex is returning. According to (name the source) Faith and Motherhood is the new theme for this season’s plot, which could reveal the arrival of a certain pregnant inmate. No matter what, the season is released after grades are due for the year, so you can binge watch without worrying about being late on your homework!

Why Hannibal Lecter is the Best Dressed Man on Television

In celebration of Hannibal’s Hotly anticipated 3rd season premiere tonight I thought I’d share my personal views on why the good doctor is, in my (almost) professional opinion, why he is the best dressed man on television

  • He’s not afraid of color

CGcPxHIWwAA7CDD6a0148c6c126f4970c01a73d81a09e970d-500wi

Most tv men in suits are locked within an almost clone like coordination- dark suit white shirt, dark tie- however hannibal is constantly wearing exciting patterns and colors that diminish everyone else on TV honestly. He can rock a crisp white three piece during the winter (which is unheard of but oh look he did it), a fan favorite red/ dark grey windowpane, blues and browns with very regal and commanding peak lapels and fittings that don’t just cast a shadow over everyone else- its the whole god-damn sun.

  • He’s consistent, but not a slave

Typically, at least for the first three seasons found in three piece plaid suits with peaked lapels and a ticket pocket button cuff spread collar shirts, pocket squares, and paisley ties. While that already outshines most characters on tv, he doesn’t stop there- on one occasion he had a velvet jacket and ascot, this season he’s doing more with double breasted suits, and another stunning white suit.

  • Even his more casual is better than most

While he doesn’t have a big casual wardrobe, when he’s found in his beautiful textured button up shirts, or even his excellently made leather jackets (also debuting this season) he stands on top of a mountain over.

In conclusion eat it (pun intended) Don Draper, Barney Stinson and the rest, and bow to the king, or, better yet, kiss the cook.

After the end of this school year, SLA will be seeing several people leave — and not just

the graduating seniors. Physics Teacher Ms. Echols and English Teacher Ms.Rami will no longer be teaching here at SLA.

Ms. Echols will be going to graduate school at University of Washington to study  physical oceanography. She will be learning specifically about climate change.  climate change.

The work is definitely different than physics. “I am interested in non-traditional science,” Ms. Echols said.  She also likes learning outside the classroom. “It can lead to one of the best learning experiences, whether you’re in high school or college.”

It was a hard decision for Ms.Echols to leave SLA, but she had been teaching for about 9 years, and had always been interested in going to grad school and be a little bit more closer to home, since she is not from Philly.

“I will really miss the SLA community.”

Ms. Rami will also be leaving the classroom, and will be working on the policy around teacher engagement and turning to teachers to find best ideas for education around the nation, with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

“I will being teachers around the country to share resources and best ideas for improving education.”

Ms. Rami admits that leaving SLA will be tough.

“ It was the hardest professional decision I ever made. It’s bittersweet to leave, because I am also moving to seattle. But this opportunity gives me a different kind of impact in the field of education. I did not want to pass it up.”

“Thanks to SLA for the past four years.”

So who will be replacing Ms. Echols and Ms. Rami?

For Physics, a new teacher has already been hired: Mr.Enzweiler.

For English, Mr. Block is going to switch from teaching History to English. Mr.Todd will teach both 10 and 12th  history next year.

Also a new history teacher has already been hired: Ms.Rapoport.
