How To Become An SLA Teacher

June 4, 2013 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

Eight years ago, Science Leadership Academy was founded in order to provide students with the highest quality of project-based learning possible. While SLA teachers aren’t deciding things entirely on their own, their collaboration with students is one of the greatest drives behind the smoothly run campus.

The teachers did not appear at SLA overnight, though. There is a process that any potential employee must go through to be offered a spot at the highly sought after high school– and it is quite a long and intricate one.

First, when an opening is announced, teachers send in resumes.

Afterwards, applicants that might be a good fit are contacted for an interview with a large group of people — Principal Lehmann, but also one or more teachers of the same subject, plus an SLA student and parent.

If the interview goes well, the candidate is invited back for a demo lesson taught by the applicant to student volunteers. When the demo lesson is over, the applicant is asked to leave. The class that saw the sample lesson then discusses the applicant’s overall presentation with the teachers. Different topics such as the strength of the lesson, interaction with the students, and even the attitude of the teacher come up as the community decides on the potential newcomer to the staff.

This process is unorthodox — many schools focus on the candidate. After her own demo lesson to work at SLA, “Being escorted out by a student showed me how much SLA valued student opinion,” English Teacher Larissa Pahomov said.

With the current budget woes of the School District of Philadelphia, the hiring process has become more complicated. In recent years, the district has implemented a rule stating that schools can only current employees of SDP. As a result, SLA (and other schools) have found a kind of loophole — they recruit teachers from other schools. From Bodine High School alone, SLA “stole” English-History Teacher Joshua Block, Health Instructor Pia Martin and Spanish Teacher Melanie Manuel.

Being at liberty to shape the length of the school year must have initially been challenging, but as time progressed, they found that this little, community-based, independent-oriented academy fit their skillset.

“I think it’s allowed me to become a better teacher,” noted Mr. Block “It’s given me more freedom and allows me to teach.”

Screen Shot 2013-06-01 at 8.13.12 PMWould you consider yourself fashionable, to stand out fashion wise amongst the students at SLA?

No, I wouldn’t consider myself fashionable, but I have been told I dress nice majority of times.

Do you know which each item is from? If so name the places you got it from.

The jean shirt and pants are from H&M. The rest is just a normal T-shirt and chucks

Who is your fashion icon that you get inspiration from?

I don’t have a fashion icon.

Where do you find inspiration?

I just try to find things that I feel fit well together.

Where do you usually shop?

I normally shop in the actual stores of H&M, Urban Outfitters, Express, but now I do most of my shopping from online stores.

Movie Review: The Great Gatsby

All-time bestselling American Novel ‘The Great Gatsby’ has been a success since 1925, still being read by people all over the world. The long awaited movie that came  out in May had high expectations from people of all ages.

The book has sold over 25 million copies over the world, and is still continuing to sell thousands of copies each year.

Tabloids predicted the Great Gatsby will be the hottest movie of the summer– Was it worth the wait?

English teacher Ms. Pahomov having taught the book for years, has a different perspective on the movie.  “The movie was kind of overkill for me — I think of the book as being more intimate, having a small scope, and then all of the CGI and drama was just too much.” she said.

There were a few high points of the movie for Pahomov however, “I appreciated that they showed Gatsby’s orange juice machine, and that Gatsby and Nick pass a car full of rich black folk on their way to New York.” she said.

Junior Helen Kilmartin and Sarah-Charlotte Brown read the book in their English class this year and went to see the movie opening night–dressing up for the occasion. “The modern music with an old background was a nice modern twist.” Helen said. “I liked the casting too.”

“ Fitzgerald’s writing style and description of images, the movie can’t match the book.” said Sarah.

Not many from the SLA community have seen the movie yet… but the Juniors from Ms. Rami’s English class are planning to see it May 30th.

Aside from the mixed reviews, the highly anticipated film is sure to be an interesting experience for anyone who has read the book.

For a senior, there are two nights that everyone looks forward to. One is when they are finally allowed to toss their graduation caps in the air. The other is, of course, prom.

This year, the Class of 2013 celebrated prom on Friday, May 17th. Before that day arrived, the students made it their jobs to select their attire and solidify plans between friends.

The weeks leading up the shindig was stressful for everyone taking part in. As Senior Morgan Marant explained it, “That night has to be perfect and I’m going to make it as perfect as possible.”

Before the 8PM start time, Individual groups met up to take pre-prom photographs at one another’s homes, the Art Museum, and other picturesque locations around the city. They then traveled to the Hyatt at the Bellevue Hotel for prom, held in a private ballroom on the nineteenth floor.

The formal dance ended at midnight, but many students continued the fun by heading to the nearest diner, sleeping over for movie marathons and camping under the stars.

When asked what was her favorite part of, Senior Bernicia Guercio, like many other, gave the same answer. “Everything, everything about it was fun.”
