What’s Up With Volleyball?

October 15, 2016 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

Mekhi Granby

Staff Writer

So, what’s new with girl’s volleyball this year?

For the girl’s volleyball team here at Science Leadership Academy, this team is unique.   According to coach Karina Hirschfield, a lot is different this time around.

“This is a real strong team, one of the strongest I’ve had,” says Hirschfield. Despite it being the beginning of the school year, this says a lot about the determination and focus of the team. In particular, Hirschfield definitely sees a great amount of potential in this year’s team.

“This year, the 14 player roster lost one of their best setters, Malwina Dymek, who was on the team for four years,” Hirschfield says. “The team has recovered from the loss with talented freshmen. We started the season playing harder teams, not like previous years.”

The team practices multiple times per week, including the weekends. No other team in the fall practices on their weekends. Because of this, the players has to juggle their courses and still play the game they enjoy.

“I have to learn how to use my time wisely and I have to do my work basically everywhere I go, on the trolley and on the bus,” says Senior Siawale Vesslee. “I also lose a lot of sleep. I have to learn how to use my time wisely, and I like that it’s a big team and we have become like a family of sisters.”

As a student athlete, one has to deal with sleep deprivation and school work. When someone has a lot on their plate, it often stresses them out.

This year, Vesslee feels the team has the skillset to compete, but they have to work on their communication.

“I think that being a part of the team is the best,” she said. “I know we have the skills to make it to the championship playoffs this year.”

Senior Jamira Terrell became a member of the SLA’s volleyball team this year. She states she’s been playing all around positions since 5th grade and settled into outside hitter from 8th grade and now here at SLA.

Jamira practices everyday to build strength and endurance even when we are not in an official practice. “I feel practice makes me a better person overall. Like the saying goes, ‘practice makes perfect.’”

Terrell agrees with Vesslee that the team has a few downfalls.

“Coming from a division one team I feel we need more team cooperation especially during disagreements,” says Terrell. “More team decisions rather than just captain decisions.”
The team currently has a 5-4 record and has the championship on their mind. Their last two games of the regular season are on Tuesday, October 18th against Bodine and Thursday, October 20th against George Washington.

Boys Soccer Wins as a Team

October 14, 2016 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

The heat settles into the bleachers and the soccer field, as the SLA men’s soccer team gathers in a huddle before their game versus Benjamin Franklin High school.  In preparation, co-captain Jori Gervani gave a heartfelt speech that he gives before every game.”

Listen up, I want to see 100% passes, 100% effort and we’re gonna go out there as a TEAM. Most of all we’re gonna go out there and have fun and play the game we love.” “Team on 3!” The team is energized, and the team storms of the field, hungry for their first victory.

On Wednesday, September 15th, the SLA men’s  soccer team won their first game in a blowout 15-0 against Benjamin Franklin High School. Coach Mark Johnson, who is new this year as SLA’s soccer coach, helped guide the team to victory. This was their first win of the season after losing their first two games., respectively. This win provided the boys with the confidence they needed to take on this season.

“We just really needed this win to continue our season. We played some of the best teams in our division. “We needed this one to stay with the best, we needed this on to stay alive,”  said Jori Gervani.

“Ben Franklin may have not been the best team, but this game was a big confidence booster for all. Ben Franklin used to be better.  That team was clearly up to play, and they clearly were in the same situation as us and lost a lot of seniors. They even beat us 11-0 last year,” said Junior William Figueiredo.

They all knew this season would prove to be a hard one. The Rockets had just lost 9 of their core players from last year, in an amazing season run that let them advance from C to B division that has left them fighting to stay in A division, the city’s best division. As a result, they are facing  better teams than last year.
Though all odds are stacked against them with a new line-up of players ranging from a few  seniors all the way down to freshman, they’ve adjusted pretty we’ll for not having a coach in school. Their mission is to hang with the best and enjoy hanging with the best. There are 7 games left in the season.

MLB Award Predictions

2016 MLB Season Award Predictions

These days in the MLB, the talent is overwhelming. From pure power hitters, to pure defensive studs, to pitchers striking batters out with ease and breezing through games, the skill levels are hard to narrow down to who is the best. However, each year, the BBWAA, or the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, must vote and discuss together the best players in the league to receive the prestigious annual awards. Names like Clayton Kershaw, Miguel Cabrera, Buster Posey, Mike Trout, and so many more have become award recipient regulars. Now with more talent stemming from the dugouts of teams across the MLB, this year, we will see some new names winning these coveted awards at the end of this year.

2016 NL MVP Award Prediction: Nolan Arenado.

“You are crazy,” are the words I will hear from readers of my bold statement, and with names like Bryce Harper, Jake Arrieta, Anthony Rizzo, Paul Goldschmidt, Andrew Mccutchen, and Clayton Kershaw still in play, choosing Arenado over these studs is far fetched. However, let’s break down the prediction and Arenado’s overall potential. Nolan Arenado came onto the scene 2013 where he finished 7th in rookie of the year voting, with 10 home runs, 52 rbi, a .267 batting average and a .405 slugging average, but in 133 games which is nothing special. The following year, he showed more pop hammering 18 home runs with a .500 slugging average and a .287 batting average, with 61 rbi in 22 less games. At this point, he was showing he should be put on the player watch list, and if you kept him on your list, most likely you enjoyed a hell of a season the next year. In 2015, in 157 games, Nolan Arenado let loose 42 dingers with an eye-popping 130 rbi, his homers were tied for most in the National League, and his rbi total was most in the MLB. Yet, he only finished 8th in NL MVP voting, a disappointing result for the slugger. However, he has not taken that into effect and in 41 games in 2016, he has already drilled 14 home runs and 34 rbi with a .314 batting average. He is easily on pace to eclipse his total from last year in home runs and I think he will, as well a sustaining a batting average around .300 with 100+ rbi, pending other players performances such as Harper, Arenado should run away with the NL MVP award in 2016.

2016 AL MVP Award Prediction: Manny Machado

Machado had hype coming in 2010 when he was the 3rd overall pick in the first round of the amatuer draft, and his MLB debut came in 2012 when he was only 19 years old and played in just 51 games, hitting 7 home runs and 26 rbi with a respectable .262 batting average, a solid rookie year but the hype was still there. In his next season, in 156 games, Machado showed the worth of his hype whopping a smashing 51 doubles, with 14 home runs, 71 rbi, a .283 batting average and a .432 slugging average. The home runs weren’t as high as expected, but the power was undeniable, and at only 20 years old, the sky was the limit. However, the following year Machado was plagued with injuries and posted lackluster numbers in 82 games. Then, in 2015, Machado delivered the best season of his young career, hitting 35 home runs, 86 rbi, a surprising 20 steals to go along with 30 doubles and a .286 batting average. The beast known as Manny Machado finally emerged and to start 2016, in just 40 games he already has 12 home runs, 26 rbi and a .323 batting average, all while already hitting a ridiculous 16 doubles. It is looking like in 2016, Machado will be reaching new heights, and these heights might propel him to his first AL MVP Award.

NL Cy Young Award Prediction: Clayton Kershaw

Clayton Kershaw is arguably the best pitcher in baseball, year after year, and this year should be no different. If it were not for Jake Arrieta’s historical run at the end of 2015, Kershaw most likely would have took home another Nl Cy Young Award, or possibly Zack Greinke who posted a 1.66 era for the season. However he fell short posting a 16-7 record with a 2.13 era and whopping 301 strikeouts. He won the Cy Young award in 2014, along with MVP, in 2013 and in 2011. Finishing in second in voting in 2012 and third last year. Meaning in since 2011, he has been a top three vote for the Nl Cy Young award every single year. This guy is a once in a lifetime pitcher and will easily make another run at the award as he is already 6-1 with a 1.67 era and 88 strikeouts in just 70 innings, enjoy the show.

AL Cy Young Award Prediction: Chris Sale

Chris Sale is an absolute ace. Since 2013, he has posted 200+ strikeouts every season, with last year posting a career high 274 strikeouts. However, his entire career he has played in the White Sox and they have not been to the best to Sale in terms of overall run support, resulting in Sale’s average wins to loses record. However with a career 2.82 era and finishing in the top six of Al Cy Young voting since 2012, he is just a 20 win season away from his first award. Now in 2016, he is seemingly taking advantage of an overall better White Sox team. In 9 games started, Sale is 9-0 with a miniscule 1.58 era and 62 strikeouts with a 0.72 WHIP. He has already thrown 3 complete game and 1 shutout, a perfect game would probably end the votings pretty early. With all jokes aside however, Sale is the clear front runner for the award in 2016.

NL Rookie of the Year Prediction: Corey Seager

Seager has been hyped up for a couple years now and in 2016, is finally a full time starter for the Dodgers, and in the first quarter of the season, he has been solid. With a .288 average, 7 home runs, and 21 rbi, he is well on his way to 25 home runs and about 90 rbi. With a post .300 batting average, stat lines like this are in MVP discussion, but Seager won’t be in those discussions just yet. With other names such as Trevor Story and Aledmys Diaz in NL Roy discussions, it is going to be a race but Seager is the best all around rookie shortstop right now.

AL Rookie of the Year Prediction: Nomar Mazara

Only receiving playing and a call up due to the injury to Shin-Soo Choo in April, Mazara became a full time starter for the Rangers and has been solid ever since his call up. In 35 games, he has a .299 batting average with 5 home runs and 13 rbi. While this kid won’t be a superstar, he will be a star outfielder for years to come and even when Choo returns, he will most likely keep his good, pending any dramatic slump. But Mazara can flat out hit and will be a staple in the Rangers lineup for many years, being one, if not the top prospect for them, and now showing why. While only Byung-Ho Park of the Twins has been Mazara’s only competition for the award, he should run away with it fairly easily.

Final NFL Mock Draft 2016

April 25, 2016 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

This is a big year in football with a few big trades already happening. Most notably, the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles had deals that moved them up to the top two picks in this draft. The Rams will pick first and will  basically decide who will be the pick  at number two  for the Eagles. Besides that, this class is loaded in defensive talent and great players that will compliment a more competitive NFL.

The following is a mock draft, where I predict the picks for each team selecting this first round. Then, I will analyze certain picks that could be catalysts throughout the draft.

456222872.0

  1. Los Angeles Rams- QB Jared Goff, California
  2. Philadelphia Eagles- QB Carson Wentz, North Dakota State

For me the Rams picked for the Eagles. The Eagles will take whoever isn’t taken, and here that would be Carson Wentz. Carson Wentz is a guy who in my opinion won’t return the worth, especially since the Eagles had Sam Bradford. Wentz had played Division II football and only played one full season, they won several national title without him. In seasons with more than 30 pass attempts, he never exceeded a completion percentage of 63.7%. In his career he also has possessed just over a 3:1 Ratio of touchdowns to interceptions. I’d love to be proven wrong, but I don’t understand the Eagles.

3.San Diego Chargers- DB Jalen Ramsey, Florida State

4.Dallas Cowboys- RB Ezekiel Elliott, Ohio State

If Jalen Ramsey is available, we know who the Cowboys will likely take. But in this scenario he is not. The Cowboys have no running back. Elliott fits the profile of a three down elite running back. A little Ladainian Tomlinson can be found. Elliott has great vision and will be a lethal tailback behind an elite offensive line. Jerry Jones is the Donald Trump of the NFL, he does exactly what he means and gets what he wants.

5. Jacksonville Jaguars- OLB Myles Jack, UCLA

6. Baltimore Ravens- OT Laremy Tunsil, Ole Miss

Laremy Tunsil becomes the steal of the draft. Tunsil has the best ability as a blocker even with off the field concerns. His talent is not ignored. Tunsil making it to the sixth overall pick for the Ravens is a classic steal for Baltimore.

7. San Francisco 49ers- DE DeForest Buckner, Oregon

8. Cleveland Browns- DE Joey Bosa, Ohio State

9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- CB Vernon Hargreaves III, Florida

10. New York Giants- DE Shaq Lawson, Clemson

11. Chicago Bears- OT Ronnie Stanley, Notre Dame

The Bears protect Jay Cutler, finally. They cut Left Tackle Jermon Bushrod back in February. The Bears at this very moment would have Charles Leno protecting Cutler’s blindside. Leno was a seventh round pick in 2014. The need and desire for elite talent are here. Stanley has all the traits to become a premier blindside protector. Some have questioned his work ethic, but Ronnie Stanley is just way too good to pass up at 11.

12. New Orleans Saints- DT Sheldon Rankins, Louisville

download (3)

13. Miami Dolphins- CB William Jackson III, Houston

14. Oakland Raiders- OLB Darron Lee, Ohio State

15. Tennessee Titans- OT Jack Conklin, Michigan State

16.Detroit Lions- DT Andrew Billings, Baylor

17. Atlanta Falcons- DE Noah Spence, Eastern Kentucky

Noah Spence has quite a bit baggage along with football talent. He shined at the Senior Bowl and at Eastern Kentucky. Spence was a primetime player with Ohio State for two seasons until he was dismissed after multiple failed drug tests and an addiction to ecstasy. This has most teams very concerned, but the talent is there. He was the clear-cut best player in Mobile, Alabama for the Senior Bowl back in January. The Bishop McDevitt grad has a lot to prove to teams, but I expect nothing but great play from Spence.

18. Indianapolis Colts- C Ryan Kelly, Alabama

19. Buffalo Bills- DT Jarran Reed, Alabama

download (4)

20. New York Jets- QB Paxton Lynch, Memphis

21. Washington Redskins- WR Josh Doctson, TCU

22. Houston Texans- WR Laquon Treadwell, Ole Miss

23. Minnesota Vikings- WR Corey Coleman, Baylor

24. Cincinnati Bengals- DT Robert Nkemdiche, Ole Miss

25. Pittsburgh Steelers- CB Mackensie Alexander, Clemson

There were some great options at #25 for Pittsburgh. Besides Alexander, Reggie Ragland and Ryan Shazier could’ve been a lot of fun to watch together. Eli Apple, the Cherry Hill native was also an intriguing. Karl Joseph was someone I wanted to hand to Pittsburgh, if he hadn’t torn his ACL in October he would be a top 15 pick. Mackensie Alexander was my choice, and that’s because he shuts down any receiver on any team. Alexander allowed less than 30% of passes his direction to even be caught. That’s amazing. He shut down many top prospects this year, like Notre Dame’s Will Fuller and Oklahoma’s Sterling Shepard. Teams would never try to throw his way, which has hurt his value since in two seasons he only accumulated eleven passes defended with zero interceptions. His value is clear, in the national championship, when he left the game, Calvin Ridley went from OK to a superstar. Every team should be giving a hard look at Mackensie Alexander.

26. Seattle Seahawks- OT Taylor Decker, Ohio State

14680332

27. Green Bay Packers- OLB Leonard Floyd, Georgia

28. Kansas City Chiefs- ILB Reggie Ragland, Alabama

Alabama continues to produce NFL talent, which has been nothing short of great. At the linebacker position, this is the safest pick in this first round besides Jack Conklin. Ragland is a defensive leader and he will learn from the best, Derrick Johnson. This team has Justin Houston injured and an aging linebacker core with Johnson and Tamba Hali. Josh Mauga and Frank Zombo aren’t the answer, and the Chiefs know defense, they will make Ragland into a stud.

AR-151009555

29. Arizona Cardinals- S Karl Joseph, West Virginia

Arizona is a team with few needs, but it wouldn’t hurt to take the best player on the board. Eli Apple could be a great option to play over Tyvon Branch and Justin Bethel, but letting D.J. Swearinger start on a great team is beyond me. Joseph is the complete safety. His game is revolved around reading the quarterback’s eyes and hitting players so hard that they’ll think twice before running around the field carelessly. Tyrann Mathieu, the other Cardinals safety is the best safety in football. This combination would make a secondary that truly couldn’t let any big plays by.

30. Carolina Panthers- CB Eli Apple, Ohio State

31. Denver Broncos- QB Connor Cook, Michigan State

The draft takes place on (Thursday April 28-30) and will be televised on be broadcasted on ESPN and NFL Network along with NFL.com.

Varsity Boys Baseball Team Dominates E&S in Win

April 23, 2016 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

On Friday, April 24th the Science Leadership Academy varsity baseball team took down E&S in an absolute rout. The final score of the game was a 15-0 finish in a mercy rule shortened game. The varsity team now stands at an 8-0 undefeated record and is in first in their division.

The SLA boys team also has a whopping total run differential this year. They have scored an incredible 84 runs while only allowing ten. They have not given up a run as a team since April 8th.

The game started with pitcher and junior Lukas Supovitz-Aznar began dealing as he quickly took down their hitters stiking out many of the batters. Then when SLA began to bat it got ugly very quickly for E&S.

After hits by many of the SLA batters including captain and senior Kevin Courtney, SLA was up on a 8-0 lead at the end of the first inning. In the second inning Aznar struck out the side, not an easy feat. The SLA boys were then held to a scoreless inning.

At times the game looked as though it might be shortened by rain, but the weather held more than long enough for this game to finish.

While winning in such a way is the major story, perhaps another big story is senior Kevin Courtney coming into the game as a pitcher. Courtney was one of SLA’s best pitchers and most promising players before his season was ended with Tommy John surgery.

Tommy John is a surgery that many pitchers go through, especially major leaguers and it takes over a year to recover from the surgery.

Courtney pitching was somewhat miraculous as he was not yet expected to start pitching, but he game into the game and finished with a strong showing, holding onto the shutout.
