What, A Mess?

Picture this: empty milk cartons abandoned on the ballroom tables, gum wrappers on the Cafe floors, and ketchup smeared on the walls. To some people this might sound like a bad day at preschool, but according to Physical Education Teacher, Pia Martin, this is just an average day at SLA. Students at SLA seem to have fallen into some nasty habits.

Everyone is familiar with Principle Lehmann’s famous announcements about litter, but some students have noticed that these trash updates have become less frequent.

Is SLA becoming cleaner? Junior Michael Nicolella doesn’t think so. “I think it (the trash) is staying the same. Look at the Cafe and the walls; there’s dried up milk and stuff.”

Michael has been attending SLA for three years and feels that the trash problem is not everyones fault. “I wouldn’t really blame it on a grade.” Nicolella says. “I know most people would, but I think it’s just people who are ignorant.”

Nicolella says that he himself tries to keep SLA clean by throwing away the garbage left by his peers and reminding his friends to keep SLA litter-free. However, he would agree that just one person trying to keep SLA clean cannot make much of a difference.

In fact, most people who tend to spend a lot of time in the Cafe are consistently inconvenienced by the litter. Physical Education Teacher, Pia Martin remarked, “It inconveniences me all the time because I cannot teach in the cafe after lunch because I don’t want (students) to have to put their hands on the floor or their hands on the table.”

Mrs. Martin explains that she doesn’t have the time or the desire to clean up after people. She believes that everyone is responsible and that they should be punished for their disrespect. “I think that there are some people who forget the rules at home. I think people are taking advantage of the maintenance staff and Officer Berg.”

Currently SLA has hired staff to clean up after the students, but most teachers and classmates have come to the consensus that everyone should take ownership of the litter problem and clean SLA.

Teachers are worried that the litter in SLA might create a bad first impression among visitors who might want to ether attend SLA or do something that would benefit the school. Most SLA teachers including Mrs. Martin were able to recall times where visitors left SLA, complaining about how dirty the building was.

This upsets them and they believe that something should be done about it. “I have this fantasy.” Says Mrs. Martin. “That we just don’t clean up and see how long it takes for people to get the hint.”

The SLA community hasn’t determined a way to solve the litter problem yet, however it is clear to see that students and teachers feel passionate about the school’s lack of cleanliness. There are “No litter” signs in the hallway walls and students are constantly reminded to clean up their trash. Little by little the school is improving in an attempt to become a better-looking and more inviting school. It’s important to keep SLA tidy and clean. As Nicolella says, “I don’t want to look like a bunch dirt bags!”

Hallway Fashion: Aaron Tang

Aaron Outfit

Exactly what are you wearing today, and do you know where each item is from?
I am wearing Hollister, Pacsun, Vans, and H&M.

What exactly does fashion mean to you?

I like getting compliments, and it represents who I am.
Do you consider yourself fashionable?

Sometimes because I think about what I wear.

How long does it usually take for you to pick out the outfit that you’re going to wear for the day? What’s your thought process as you pick out these clothes?

10-15 minutes. My outfit depends on the weather. If it’s rainy I’ll wear sweatpants, if it’s sunny I’ll wear khakis or jeans, and a button down or sweater. If it’s a special occasion I’ll wear something formal.
Who/What do you get your fashion inspiration from?

I get inspiration from my friends.
What are some of your favorite places to shop, or what are your favorite brands? And Why?

I sometimes shop at Hollister because they used to have a lot of what the style was, but now I shop at Pacsun and Urban because it’s kind of formal, and they follow the trends that people wear. I also wear a lot of vans because I see a lot of people wearing them I guess. I only shop when it’s on sale.

App Review: Lulu

November 7, 2013 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

Girls and guys rating each other and checking each other out is old news.

These ratings have moved online. This has been made possible by the app called Lulu, created by Alexandra Chong.

lulu_app1

The app allows girls to anonymously rate guys based off their looks, personalities, habits, and hobbies.

This app was created in April 2013, and since then has amounted over one million users.

Many claim this app sexist, as girls are rating guys in a demeaning way. While others say that this app allows people to cyber bully.

Colleges are where this app has been proven to be most successful. Girls are constantly rating guys, and guys are constantly trying to get a good rating.

An important thing to note is that while you are anonymous, you must log in through Facebook and be over the age of 18. As a result, the app has not taken off in high schools.

The purpose of the app was to be a way that women could share their thoughts and opinions with others, in a positive way. However the opposite of that has been achieved.

The app almost seems to be pro-cyber bullying. Girls are allowed to give hateful reviews, because there are no filters on the app. That is definitely not the intent, but it is what it has come to.

While Chong says that crazy ex-girlfriends, and girls only wishing to give guys a bad name are not a part of the app, that is far from the truth.

The app lets you rate guys anonymously, therefore anyone can put any kind of review about a guy. You can hashtag a guy with anything you wish. It is very easy to say cruel and negative comments about a guy.

This app is also creating a double standard. If guys were to make an app that rates women anonymously, women would become outraged and find it very sexist and degrading.

Since it’s women, it’s apparently ‘okay.’

Hopefully the creator will come to her senses and get rid of the app before it gets more out of hand and continues to grow and prosper.

To all guys; watch out, you may be the next victim of Lulu.

English Teacher Mr. Kay founded the Philadelphia Slam League at SLA in 2006 during the first year the school was open.

The club was a lunch time club for two years, and it became an after school activity during the third year SLA was open.

Poetry Club began with 6 schools competing in the drama studio at our school, and then it was moved to the Franklin Institute the following year.

After the first year, the amount of participating schools jumped from 6 to 16.

Greg Corben was the man who started Philadelphia Poetry Movement in Philadelphia, which includes the competitions Philadelphia poetry students compete in.

“There was no place without alcohol for kids to perform poetry at before” Mr. Kay quoted Greg Corben’s reason to start the Poetry Movement.

Check out some of the student poets at SLA’s poems in the making.

To Tank or Not to Tank- Sports Talk with the Straight Shuter

To Tank or Not to Tank- Sports Talk with the Straight Shuter

by Jesse Shuter

Staff Writer

Philadelphia 76ers guard Michael Carter-Williams and Miami Heat's Chris Bosh

The Philadelphia 76ers season has started with a boom. They quickly became 3-0 beating three of the best teams in the NBA with what appeared to be ease.

Finally game four, their gameplay began to fall apart and even looked sloppy at some points. They finally began to look human. Ex-sixer Andre Igoudala seemed unstoppable against his old team, looking like possibly the best player in the league during that game.

It was widely believed that the Sixers both should and would tank this season on purpose in order to land the highly coveted NBA prospect Andrew Wiggins. After the first three games the game plan seemed to have changed.

Michael Carter-Williams has been the surprise of the season. He has played like an absolute super star. This was shocking especially considering he was in my opinion the Sixers’ third choice in the draft. After they traded Jrue Holliday away for Nerlens Noel and New Orleans’ 2014 first round pick, I thought they wanted college star Trey Burke, but Burke was taken two picks before them so they had to settle for Carter-Williams.

Settle may be the wrong word considering how good MCW had been for the Philadelphia basketball team. Experts have been comparing the Syracuse rookie to legend Magic Johnson, which is quite an impressive comparison.

So here is the question, what do the Sixers do? Should they tank, or should they try to win it all?

Whatever the decision will be they need to make it soon. If they keep winning they will quickly lose the option of drafting Wiggins. Some people say that the Sixers are one star away from being the best team in the NBA. If speculation proves true, Wiggins could be that star.

The interesting thing is that most Philadelphia fans wanted the Sixers to fail and all other Philadelphia teams (Eagles, Phillies, Flyers) to succeed. Of course the opposite seems to be true considering the other teams have had very disappointing seasons (which is a generous way to put it). Meanwhile the Sixers have saved the honor of Philadelphia sports for the first time in a long time.

Philadelphia might be the city with the biggest differential between fan adoration and love towards their teams and the talent that those teams possess. The entire franchise of Philadelphia sports is on the bottom, while fans continue to sell out games and follow their teams with vigor.

The Take Away:

The Sixers are legitimate contenders, and it’s only a matter of time before they either figure that out and try to win it all, or decide to tank. It appears that at this rate if they really want to get Wiggins, they are going to start trading away players. I speculate the first to go will be Spencer Hawes. I personally think that the Sixers should tank especially considering that they have finally been brought back down to reality. The NBA is the only professional league that relies on stars, and this may be the Sixers only chance in a while to get one. I can only imagine how good they could be with Andrew Wiggins.

Shuter’s Sleeper of the Week:

Victor Cruz (WR) Giants-

The Giants have had possibly the most disappointing year of any team in football. This week they are playing the Oakland Raider, the same team that was absolutely demolished by the Philadelphia Eagles. If Riley Cooper can grab three touchdowns against this team with the ball being thrown by Nick Foles, I can only imagine what Cruz will do getting the ball from Eli Manning.
