Nice suits, handsome men, action, puppies- what more can you ask for? Unlike most modern spy movies, Kingsman: The Secret Service doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that part of its appeal. Its completely and purposefully on the nose and willing to play around with the typical spy movie tropes: – a maniacal villain in a secret lair in the mountains, a gentleman spy, secret gadgets, and more.

The film centers around ‘Eggsy’ Unwin, a young man who looks as if he’s due for a life behind bars, when he is taken under the wing of Harry Hart, whose life was saved by Eggsy’s father. Eggy’s father, like Harry, was a member of the dapper british spy agency known as “The Kingsmen”, whose headquarters is located inside a tailor shop.  With training, Eggsy and Harry must save the world from insane internet Billionaire Richmond Valentine and his talented assassin gazelle, who has knives on the ends of her prosthetic legs, as he plans a global culling of the world’s  population.

The ensemble cast was great. The fearsome Samuel L Jackson as this lisp spouting villain who can’t stand the sight of blood, the calm Colin Firth as this badass bar-and-church-fighting-double-breasted-suit-wearing spy, and a big treat comes from the newcomer Taron Egerton, who was able to do heart, comedy and action all extremely well. This kid’s got a long career ahead of him.

I will warn you: the film is very very violent with many deaths.  However, the violence is typically so over-the-top and impossible that it’s often , if not always played for laughs. It is worth noting the costuming in this film, as Harry Puts it “A suit is a modern day gentlemen’s armor, and the Kingsmen are its knights” and boy is beautiful armor, and this is coming from someone who wears suits everyday. The suits are double breasted, which purposely contrasts and makes them far more unique than the typical single breasted suits of spies and each one shows real quality. And even those who weren’t wearing full suits all the time like tech wizard Merlin’s sweater, Valentine’s unique look and sneakers and Eggy’s also unique vibe. In fact I also quite liked that the director made an actual clothing line for many of the suits in the film, which I hope can be done for more fashion-trending films, and they can be found the the Mr. Porter website (fair warning though, its expensive).

As I mentioned the film had some great mixture of elements like with humor and drama  (though mostly humor) that others don’t have as much. An example of another like this would be the latest Bond movie Skyfall which, while mostly dramatic was able to poke fun at itself and led some laughs, while (and I haven’t seen this myself) an example of one that doesn’t have as good mixture would be Taken which can be overtly gritty without managing a balance.

Go see this movie. In fact, reserve some time to go see it a second or even a third time- it is just that good, the kind of entertainment  that a lot of people can find something to enjoy. You can see it with family, friends or even a date.

In fact because, I’m so insistent on everyone treating himself to this movie, here’s a link to fandango below if you’d like to buy tickets to this great piece of film:

So please, in the words of Tom Haverford and Donna Mingle of Parks and Rec :”treat yo self”.

Jupiter Ascending: aka “The Lannister’s in Space with Mommy Issues” review

To be clear: I wanted to like this film. It had so, so much potential and incredible visuals, but even that couldn’t save this terrible, terrible film. Fair warning, there will be a few spoilers below to elaborate how bad it was, but please do read on.

The film centers around a young girl named Jupiter Jones (mila Kunis), a humble janitor who learns that she is an exact genetic copy of the dead monarch/ mother of the universe’s most powerful dynasty- the Abrasaxes, three siblings who each want a claim on the planet that she legally holds claim over- the earth- which can be ‘harvested’ for an enormous profit for either of the parties. To “harvest” means to kill an entire population of a planet to create youth serum so that those with enough money might live forever. She is rescued by ex-military alien called canine (channing tatum) who is working for the sibling Titius Abraxas (Douglas Booth). Despite seeming to mean well, he is planning to kill her, to claim her inheritance. Soon it becomes a battle to the Earth from abraxas when the main villain Balem (portrayed by Eddie Redmayne) kidnaps Jupiter’s family and holds them hostage on his factory in the planet Jupiter. Jupiter refuses to sign over the Earth to Balaam, who falls and is presumed dead in an ensuing battle that destroys his factory. Jupiter wipes her families mind of the experience and continues work as a janitor while trying to figure out what her next step should be, and has started a relationship with Canine. If this sounds confusing, it is. The film really needed one of those “long ago” 3 minute monologues and montage at the beginning of the film which would have saved everyone in the audience a ton of confusion. While I applaud originality in film- and this film does have a lot of that- if you can’t get a new and broad universe in an easy way then you’re during them a giant disservice.

Anyhoo, let’s get back to the Abrasaxes. As the title suggests-  are the Lannisters in SPACE, complete with pretty long haired guy who wants to screw his own family members, a scheming sister and a whiny psychotic man-child. Yes you heard the former correctly the pretty boy (Titus) wanted to marry a woman that was his mother reincarnated, while he revolved ulterior motives behind this later, it left the audience with a chunk of unforgettable time in which you believed he wanted to, essentially, screw his mother. The Abrasaxes have a lot of mommy issues in this film, in fact Mila Kunis’s “victory” line to Eddie Redmayne is, literally “I’m not your damn mother.” As you can tell this film has a lot of writing issues.

Who Mila Kunis does end up screwing in the end is a dog/ angel hybride.

I am not kidding.. And to make matters worse- the hybrid is played by Channing Tatum. And to be honest, there was about as much chemistry between them as those Pandas that refuse to mate in the zoo. So Mila Kunis options in this film are to either screw her son or a dog. Somehow I’m thinking ted 2 is looking pretty damn good to her right about now.

Now about some other parts; as previously mentioned, at one point eddie redmayne (more on him later) kidnaps Jupiter’s family and threatens to kill them if she doesn’t sign over the earth to him, which is all well and good and villainous except we don’t give a shit about these people at all; they’re terrible. Theres like 10 of them, maybe 4 of which get any lines, which includes a sexist greedy uncle, a slimeball cousin who wanted her to sell her f#%$ing utero eggs for 2/3rds of the profit, all of which he spends (wrongly assuming she went through with it) on a new TV and plays video games in his underpants.

HE WANTED TO SELL HER F#$%ING EGGS

I am even not kidding. I wish to the heavens above the mountains below I was but this movie has decided to test my very fortitude in what I can stand and dear lord it reached its breaking points a long time ago. I mean seriously? There’s no alternative? HOW DESPERATE CAN YOU BE?

And oh Eddie Redmayne *long sighful moan*, while he seems like a pretty good actor and seemed really good in the Theory of Everything (I haven’t seen it myself to confirm), Oscar worthy this was not, nor was it Raspberry award worthy- either. He lacked the villainous ooze that even the campiest of the camp can do. He was always either whispering or shouting, no inbetween at all. He could have been so good, but just wasn’t meant to be.

I once heard that the movie Prometheus was the most beautiful film you ever wanted to punch in the face. If that’s true, then this is the most beautiful film you ever wanted to slit its throat out, let the neck blood freeze into blood-icicles, stab the body with the blood-circles, tie the body to an anchor and sent it down the artic sea and allow the ice to freeze on top of the patch of water. Where it will never  be found until the Earth is incinerated; taking this film back to the depths of Hell whence it came and where it belongs.

So I wouldn’t waste your time and money with buying a ticket to the movies, if you want to see it, i suggest waiting till it’s on tv or dvd, because as cool as the visuals are, its probably not enough for everyone. I personally liked seeing it in theaters because I got to enjoy the visuals and made fun of it with my Dad, but if you can’t have someone there to laugh it off with, it won’t be your cup of tea.

Well at least we’ll always have a cardboard cutout of mila kunis for when she married her son for $30: http://www.ebay.com/itm/JUPITER-ASCENDING-JONES-MILA-KUNIS-LIFESIZE-CARDBOARD-STANDUP-STANDEE-CUTOUT-/271676381428

Go on, click on the link, I am not even kidding.

All this being said, I’ll still probably get it on DVD, likely in the $5 movie pile at Walmart.

With so many good looking films coming this year, lets take a look at the years most anticipated, and perhaps smaller known gems, hitting theaters soon

The previous Wachowski film; Cloud Atlas will always go down as one of my favorites, if not my #1 favorite film, so naturally I’m curious about their next picture, and boy it does not look like it will disappoint. With some truly breathtaking images and an all star cast, including Golden Globe winner Eddie Redmayne as the film’s villain, Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Sean Bean, Douglas Booth, this seems like a truly promising film. While the plot seems a little predictable at glance, it’s sure to be an entertaining ride all the way through and definitely worth seeing on the big screen, trust me.

Release date: February 6th

Bonus, the films visuals are enough to see the film alone, to get a closer look at the beautiful costuming, set design and artwork check out this website: http://lookbook.jupiterascending.com/

While I suspect It won’t be the best rated nor successful film of the year, it definitely looks like one of the most fun. with thrilling fantasy visuals including dragons, magic, monsters, witches and more, paired with a cast including Oscar nominated actress Julianne Moore, playing a villainous witch, Jeff bridges as an ageing evil fighter, Ben Barnes as his apprentice and other like Kit Harington bring this to a promising roundout. The story centers around a young man named Thomas who, under the tutelage of aging Master Gregory, learns to fight off the evil spirits of the world, especially with the escape of the evil witch Mother Malkin. I’d recommend taking advantage of the big screen and this films effects and treat yourself to a little fantasy.

Kingsmen: The Secret Service

Nice suits, attractive people, action, a knife- on prosthetic legs assassin, british spies- what more is there to love? The director of X- Men: First Class, which was a surprising, action packed and even at times humorous treat; that looks as if will be continued here with Kingsmen, also based on a comic book of the same name.  With a cast varying from the unexpected hero of colin firth,  handsome newcomer Taron Edgerton, the always- a delight- Samuel L. Jackson as the villain along with Michael Caine, Mark Strong and even a cameo appearance from Mark Hamill (which is a joke relating to his appearance in the comic) A summer blockbuster for a winter blockbuster has a lot of promise, and  looks like a whole ‘lotta fun.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron

With the surprising success of The Avengers and the massive media giant that is marvel, their upcoming blockbuster is sure to be . With a plethora of success and it’s previous installment breaking many box office’s and becoming eating the place of 3rd most successful movies in the world, It’s sure to be a talk of the summer. Part of the appeal is the new villain, and while some are good I’ve personally felt that the villains were not the MCU’s strongest suit, but this is a character I’ve found interesting and looks to be  brought to life with chilling grace by the talented James Spader, leaving me with a hopeful promise of something wonderfully entertaining. But i’ll try to go in without too many reservations/ expectations, so that there are no strings on me…

Mad Max: Fury Road

A blood pumping action ride, with eye catching visuals and an all star cast, the reboot of the mad max franchise seems to have its teeth out for the new world (and a new potential audience at that). For anyone unfamiliar with the franchise; it takes place in a post apostolic future where humans are now practically savages who fight in the heat of the sun armed to the teeth with sharp devices and roaring engines. This installment features the talented Tom Hardy as the titular Max, including actors and actresses nearly unrecognizable in their roles like Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult. With some good actors and a pure escapism realm of overdone action, this looks to be an entertaining ride.

CHAPPiE

We see so often films and tv shows warning us of the dangers of technological progression. Whether it’s the Robot uprising, the media hungerness in us all we have seen many depictions of the warnings moving forward. This does not look like one of those films. Instead what CHAPPiE promises is instead, our ability as humans to create something so different, yet so human at the same time. In the film CHAPPiE is a robot and AI who, rather than being some ingenious stoic computer from the get-go learns about the world around him, like a child learning what words mean and how things work. Within his group of misfits CHAPPiE has found a home, but it doesn’t look too secure as he will face rejection from the world around him. While it doesn’t carry many A- listers, aside from Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and even Dev Patel, it looks like it one of the strongest performers will be CHAPPiE himself, done through motion capture by Sharlto Copley. This film truly seems like it will be a thought provoking and heart warming/ shattering film that you might walk out of the theater more than a little changed.

Release date: March 6th

Jurassic_World

Jurassic World

It’s been several years since we’ve seen the dinosaurs terrorize us within the jurassic franchise, but its latest and potentially one of its greatest, will give us something entirely new to fear. Set 22 years after the original film, the Dinosaur theme park “Jurassic world” has been running smoothly for about 10 years, however visitors are beginning to decline. So in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, as well as re-spark visitor’s interest, the Park’s scientists create a new attraction, a genetically engineered, original and looks to be terrifying dinosaur. However soon it escapes, and it’s getting hungry, with a whole park of innocents on the dinner menu… With some strong cast members like Parks and Rec/ Guardians of the Galaxy’s Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jake Johnson Katie Mcgrath, Nick Robinson- this looks like a movie to ‘really get your teeth’ into.

Terminator: Genisys

Past and present meet in another installment of the infamous Terminator franchise, that has Arnold Schwarzenegger return to the role that made him infamous. A new timeline has been created, in which Kyle Reese, a protagonist in the original film, comes to the past to save Sarah Connor (like in the original film) only to find her on quest to save the world from Skynet, with the ageing Schwarzenegger Terminator, and will face off against the menacing machines of the evil Skynet, including the infamous t-1000 and apparently multiple younger version of Schwarzenegger’s terminator. With an impressive ensemble including Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke as the infamous Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney, J.K Simmons, Doctor who’s matt smith, Jason Clarke and of course Mr. Schwarzenegger himself.

Pan

From the trailer alone it looks to be a promising adventure filled tale of a new and unique take on the infamous world of Neverland. This land, It’s peter Pan himself who is whisked from 19th century London by villainous captain… Blackbeard. As you’ve probably guessed by this point, this story is essentially a prequel to the iconic peter pan story that shows how pan becomes the legend we all know of him as. It’s trailer shows a number of eye catching and imaginative scenes, costuming and sets that should be appealing to multiple audiences. It also includes a great cast, such as Hugh Jackman as the film’s villain Blackbeard, Garrett Hedlund as a younger, heroic Hook, Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily, Amanda Seyfried and newcomer Levi Miller as the titular hero. With enough for a wide number of people, it looks to be a good summer adventure.

LEGEND-Tom-Hardy__140612175540-575x383

Legend

In the 1960’s London was terrorized by crime, especially from the violent Reggie and Ronnie Kray; twins who are almost synonymous with this time. Both twins will be acted by the talented Tom Hardy, who has been proving himself more and more capable of tackling a range of characters,  which part of what makes me intrigued and interested in the film.  It has also attached a wonderful cast like harry potter’s David Thewlis, Doctor who’s Christopher Eccleston as the police officer dedicated to taking down the Crays, Merlin’s Colin Morgan, Emily Browning as Ronald’s wife, Kingsmen’s Taron Edgerton as Reggie’s boyfriend and more. Along with some smart suits/ clothing and interesting period of time, this looks to be an interesting piece to watch.

Release date: (tentative) October 1st

Spectre

Coming from a family of James bond fans, and enjoying the recent films myself, I sometimes asked if they would ever be able to bring the iconic villains from the 60s that had been so parodied in the Austin Powers movies. That seems to be what they are doing here; and after the last film, which I fully enjoyed, and rounded by a stellar cast; including 2 time oscar winner Christoph Waltz (who was born to play a bond villain) supposedly playing the infamous blofield, this can’t come soon enough.

Release date: November 6th

The Hateful Eight

Quentin Tarantino is a filmmaker with a long history of successes and a following of many who appreciate his masterful craft. His new film tells the tale of 8 bounty hunters in post civil war america who meet while traveling during a blizzard  and thus chaos ensues. With some interesting cast members like previous tarantino collaborators Samuel L. Jackson and Tim Roth it’s hard to imagine the next Tarantino will be without something to enjoy.

Release Date: November 13

Pride-and-Prejudice-and-Zombies-First-Look

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

After a long time spent in development hell “Pride Prejudice and Zombies” based off the book, which takes most of the text of Jane Austen’s classic but ads in scenes of slaying the undead; looks to finally be coming in it’s full wacky glory. With a stellar cast including Game of Thrones’ Lena Headey and Charles Dance, Doctor who’s Matt Smith, Douglas Booth, Jack Huston, Sam Riley and more shows a promising, sure to be funny film that will be applicable and treat to a very wide number of genres and fans.

Release date: Uncertain, later in the year/ fall probably

Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Pt. 2

Throughout the past few years, “The Hunger Games” trilogy has been keeping audiences hungry for more; and while it may be our last trip to the dark world of Panem, the final film looks already to be an exciting conclusion to a satisfying and entertaining series. As the rebellion against the corrupt Capital grows, it looks as if the “girl on fire” Katniss everdeen will feel the heat from both her enemies, and her allies. From what I know of the books and what I’ve gathered from the movies, the people that she’s been with will begin to become more divided with her as they start to overthrow the capitol; all of which will come down to a hopefully thrilling finale, worthy of the series fame and popularity.

Release date: November 20th

Star Wars Episode VII

While I have my own reservations on the film, I’d be a fool to deny it’s going to make a big impact around the world, and will probably generate enough money that J.J Abrams can swim scrooge mcduck style as his butler James Cameron waits on him. But aside from impact the movie has interesting promise and potential, with all the money and effort Disney has put into this film, and with the recent success of their other owned franchise, Marvel Comics, it seems very unlikely they are going to mess it up, and on a personal note, I can’t wait to indulge my inner child and return to the galaxy a galaxy far far away…

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 Film Review : The Fire Burns Bright!

First off, before I even get into the awesomeness of the film itself, I want to praise the marketing team for a wonderful promotional campaign. They created several astonishing and visually eye catching images,  especially the ones highlighting the districts like the one below and the incredibly detailed website The Capita.pn that is well worth a visit.

district07-435x580

The film itself was an excellent treat for those that have been searching for an worthwhile cinematic journey lately. Mockingjay had strong performances, stunning effects and a well-kept pace leaves the audience ‘hungry’ for more. The film picks up where Catching Fire left off — Katniss and her allies, among them the long lost district 13, are no longer competing in a gladiator fight against each other, instead a much more dangerous battle altogether- a war with the tyrannical and ruthless Capital, which will stop at nothing to regain its power over the districts. In a current world where a youtube video can, quite literally, spark a revolution, it’s worth noting the power of propaganda as demonstrated several times in this film on both sides of the conflict.

As previously stated I felt the performances were all strongly delivered her The always- good Jennifer Lawrence showed a more uneven side of Katniss, struggling to adapt in a new world without the same singular purpose as the previous films and having great responsibility sprung onto the girl who started it all off by simply trying to save her sister. While having less screen time this film, Josh Hutcherson is able to give a wonderfully nuanced and more subtle performance as Peeta Malik, the poor boy with the bread who has suffered greatly at the hands of the Capitol. Other returning characters like Finnick, Heavensbee, Haymitch and Beetee were able to show a few new sides while new characters like the icy President Coin, left us in mystery to some of her intentions.hunger-games-mockingjay-part-1 While it was a little sad to see the great comic relief that is Effie Trinket without her fabulous outfits, she was still able to steal every scene she was in. An often overlooked force in the movies, but is always entertaining is Donald Sutherland as President Cornelius Snow who nails the head on the wall with whatever he needs; the loving caregiver, the cold villain or the ruthless enforcer he provides them all in a wonderfully sinister character.

Paragraph more into the real-world connection HERE. (SLA media is looking further into this and will be publishing an article on it soon)

This movie is definitely not for one who hasn’t seen the previous films (or at least read the books) but for fans of the series there’s a lot to enjoy, even as a movie in general, and while I can’t speak for the accuracy to the book I would find it hard for there to be too many inconsistencies/ changes. If you can I’d strongly urge you to “volunteer as tribute” to see the next exciting installment of the Hunger Game series currently in theaters.

Staff Writer

As the color of the trees change from summer’s green to autumn’s gold, the school work of SLA students begin to pile up. One of the essential tasks students must take on to complete their work, while fulfilling one of the school’s core values, is research. Whether it’s reading about a philosopher’s interpretation of the US constitution or the Ebola outbreak in the United States, the articles, as interesting as they might be, become heavy on the eyes. As a way to solve this predicament that many SLA students might face, SLA Media has decided to launch a feature series called “One Page On…”.
The SLA Media Team knows the importance of students understanding current events. Understanding current events not only show how well informed students can be, but also show the potential they have to be social citizens who can form detailed opinions on any topic. On behalf of the entire SLA Media team, we hope that this series is helpful during benchmark season and serve as a reliable source for your bi-weekly 2fers!
