Blunt Sports Talk from Mr. Bundy: D. Wade aka Flop King; Mayweather Fights Marcos Maidana in May; Daniel Alfredsson loses teeth; Dunk of the Week

March 6, 2014 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

D. Wade aka Flop King

Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat is no stranger to the act of flopping. Over his 10 year career D.Wade has done is his fair share of acting on the court, but very few are as ridiculously Oscar worthy as his flop from last night’s game against the Houston Rockets.

While defending James Harden, D. Wade committed one of the best flops I’ve personally ever seen. Harden happens to slightly touch Wade with his arm as he gets past him, but Wade reacts as if he was just decapitated. The crazy, yet not surprising, thing is the fact that a foul was actually called on James Harden for this play. It looks like D.Wade is going to have a hefty fine to pay when the NBA gets ahold of this clip…. Still deserves an Oscar though.

Mayweather Fights Marcos Maidana in May

It’s official! Floyd “Money” Mayweather(46-0-0) will have Marcos Maidana(35-3-0) as his next victim. This past week, Mayweather announced who his next opponent will be and it will be none other than the man who knocked out Floyd’s prodigee Adrien Broner; Marcos Maidana. Maidana previously was speculated to have a rematch with Broner as his next match, but this was put to rest when Mayweather announced him as his next opponent.

It’s safe to say that Mayweather is going to try and get some payback for Broner by knocking Maidana. If Mayweather does knock him out, this will be the first knockout victory that Mayweather has had since his controversial KO victory over Victor Ortiz. This fight is scheduled for May 3, 2014 on Pay-Per-View via Showtime/CBS.

Daniel Alfredsson loses teeth

Hockey players are known for their toughness, more so than any other professional sport. Daniel Alfredsson of the Detroit Red Wings proved that to be true last in a game against the New Jersey Devils. After being hit in the mouth by an opponents hockey stick, Alfredsson continued to play as if nothing happened. It wasn’t until he realized that his mouth was bleeding that he stopped to discover a few of his teeth on the ice.

In true, stereotypical hockey player fashion, instead of leaving the game, Alfredsson simply picked up his teeth, and continued the game after a short break as if nothing happened. He’s scheduled to have some dental work done today to fix the gaps in his teeth.

Dunk of the Week: Kenny Dobbs Dunk over Man on Fire

Kenny Dobbs is known as one of the best dunkers in street basketball. So much so, that his dunks make NBA Slam Dunk Contest dunks look like a walk in the park. His newest dunk does just. In truly spectacular fashion, Dobbs dunks over a man who is lit on fire… with a ball that is on fire…. setting the net on fire…. Straight Fire.

Blunt Sports Talk from Mr. Bundy: No More Slurs in NFL; Canadian Insult to Injury; Michael Sam at Combine; Dunk of the Week

February 22, 2014 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

No More Slurs in NFL

refs

It is a well known fact that during professional sports, especially intense ones like Professional Football, racial slurs are thrown around by players and officials alike with no regard to the real meanings behind these words. The most notable being the “N-word”.

An equality, and diversity within the NFL, group by the name of the “Fritz Pollard Alliance” (FPA), hopes to bring this on-field racism to an end.

Back in November, in an open letter to the NFL general counsel, the “Fritz Pollard Alliance” expressed its desire to have fouls called on players and coaches who are heard using racial slurs during games.

“[W]e believe that the League can address this concern by instructing Game Day officials to step up enforcement of Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1(b) of the League’s Playing Rules, which prohibits the use of ‘abusive, threatening, or insulting language or gestures to opponents, officials, teammates, or representatives of the League…… Directing the ‘N’ word towards others in a place of work is abusive, threatening, and insulting. We believe the League should authorize Game Day officials to use graduated discipline with warnings, 15 yard penalties and ejections as appropriate.” (FPA)

Now, 3 months later, the FPA may end up getting exactly what they wanted. In a owner’s meeting next month, FPA chairman John Wooten, will be presenting his case and it looks as though there’s a very good chance that he will get his way.

“I will be totally shocked if the competition committee does not uphold us on what we’re trying to do. We want this word to be policed from the parking lot to the equipment room to the locker room,” Wooten said, according to CBSSports.com. “Secretaries, PR people, whoever, we want it eliminated completely and want it policed everywhere. I think they’re going to do what needs to be done here,” he said. “There is too much disrespect in the game.”

Canadian Insult to Injury

After a thrashing win over the United States women’s hockey team in the finals yesterday and the men’s hockey team today, Canada has all the right in the world to talk as much trash as they want. But the question remains….

Would hockey have still not mattered had the U.S won? Does the fact that hockey “doesn’t matter” cause this diss from a Canadian Bar in Halifax to sting any less? Does pain and suffering make tears sweeter? Does one gain any nutritional value from drinking tears?

Either way, it’d be great if Canada would at least take it easy on America considering they already beat us in Vancouver in 2010. Let the U.S live, Canada!

Michael Sam at Combine

Prior to the NFL Combine, defensive linemen Michael Same made news by proclaiming to be the first “openly gay draft prospect in NFL History”. He clearly knew what was going to come from that statement, and was primed and ready for the media attention he would receive at this year’s combine. He faced every question with poise, intelligence, and maturity.

When asked if he’s worried about the reactions form teammates, opponents or fans, he simply responded with; “No, not at all. I’ve been getting a lot of great positives from all kinds of fans. And when I’m on the field, I really don’t focus on fans. I’m focused on my responsibilities, such as the guy across from me.”

And when asked if he’d be okay if the Miami Dolphins selected him, he was clear that he — ironically enough — refused to discriminate. Even though the Dolphins organization has many more problems in it than Sam … no matter what your beliefs may be.

“If the Miami Dolphins drafted me, I would be proud to be part of that organization,” he said. “But I’m not afraid of going into that environment. I know how to handle myself, I know how to communicate with my teammates, I know how to communicate with my coaches, and any other staff.”

The only problem lies with the simple fact that he has caused massive amounts of media attention, but isn’t anything more than a 3rd round pick, if at all. General managers throughout the league have to be wondering whether or not he’s worth all of the negative attention their team would face from media and fans. If he were a clear star then their would probably be no problem at all, but the fact that he’s nothing more than sub-par on an NFL level causes extreme and understandable resistance.

Dunk of the Week

With the start of our weekly spectacular NBA dunk, we go to Memphis Tennessee where Forward, James Johnson threw an off the backboard alley-oop to himself…. In traffic.

And this dunk wasn’t purely just to be fancy. He was left in a position where he would be forced to shoot a very awkward shot, or throw down a once in a blue moon, highlight dunk…  We’re all glad he chose the latter.

Blunt Sports Talk from Mr. Bundy: Top 5 Most “Beast Mode” Runs in NFL History, and Lebron Heats up the Court

February 20, 2014 by lpahomov Leave a Comment

Top 5 Most “Beast Mode” Runs in NFL History

Throughout the last NFL season, there were plenty of great runs made by Running Backs and Quarterbacks alike but there were not many BEAST MODE runs.

The term “beast mode”, made popular by Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch, describes when a running back runs over numerous defenders, breaking tackles left and right. During these runs, these running backs are unstoppable monsters on a rampage. Hence the term, “beast mode”.

Throughout NFL history there has been countless BEAST MODE runs, but these are the top 5 in NFL history, simply based on the overall level of aggression, drive, and beastliness. Enjoy.

#3: Steve Young- 1998: Vikings @ 49ers
#2: Earl Campbell- 1978: Rams @ Oilers
#1: Marshawn Lynch- 2011: Saints @ Seahawks

Lebron “Heats up the Court”

Last night Lebron James reminded everyone that he can score with the best of them. Scoring a season high 42 points along with 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals. This has been the 6th time out of 7 games in which the Heat have outscored the Dallas Mavericks.

There is speculation going around the league that Kevin Durant will overtake James for the league-wide MVP award this year after the stellar season that Durant is having. Was James’ 42 point game enough to end that conversation or has Durant just been too good this season to deny? We’ll all just have to wait until the playoffs to find out.

Blunt Sports Talk from Mr. Bundy: Sochi, Cardinals, and Windmill George

Shaun White out of Slopestyle

Apologies to all Shaun White fans, the career 17-time gold medalist will not be going for 2 more golds at this years winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. White was expected to participate in both slopestyle and halfpipe at the Olympics, however due to a reported wrist injury, as well as questionable slopestyle conditions in Sochi, Shaun has decided to withdraw from slopestyle. Instead he will be focusing all of his time and energy on winning his 3rd consecutive Olympic gold medal in the halfpipe competition.

“After much deliberation with my team, I have made the decision to focus solely on trying to bring home the third straight gold medal in halfpipe for Team USA,” he said in a statement released earlier today. “The difficult decision to forego slopestyle is not one I take lightly as I know how much effort everyone has put into holding the slopestyle event for the first time in Olympic history, a history I had planned on being a part of.”

White also admitted that his wrist is OK, but he does not want to risk re-injuring it and losing out on his other Olympic goals.

“With the practice runs I have taken, even after course modifications and watching fellow athletes get hurt, the potential risk of injury is a bit too much for me to gamble my other Olympic goals on,” he said.

With his best interest in mind, it would be selfish for us to want him to risk injury just to participate in slopestyle. Whether it’s slopestyle or halfpipe, White will be at the Olympics attempting to make history again.

Larry Fitzgerald Restructures Contract with Cardinals

In his 10 year career, Larry Fitzgerald has been amazing for the Arizona Cardinals. He’s one of the few athletes who have spent their entire career with one team and was hoping to continue to do that with the upcoming 2014-15 NFL season. But after rumors of him being traded due to his immense $18 million salary cap for 2014, it didn’t look too good for Fitzgerald and the Cardinals.

Luckily though, things have worked in Fitzgerald’s favor, as he revealed on Twitter yesterday evening.

Screen Shot 2014-02-05 at 5.28.27 PM

If the Cardinals planned on doing better than the playoffless season that they had this past year, they knew they would need a loyal, veteran and lucky for them they got to keep that with Fitzgerald.  Depending on the specific numbers and cap rules within the agreement, the Cardinals should be able to improve their team and increase their Championship hopes.

Windmill George

Paul George and the Indiana Pacers are cooking this season, with the best record in the NBA. George has not been simply leading the Pacers to the best record, but has been doing so in spectacular fashion. A lot of people have seen and heard about George’s extreme 360 windmill dunk against the Clippers on January 18th, but George proved that he isn’t done with the crazy dunks, with this dunk from last night’s game with the Atlanta Hawks.

It’s the Super Bowl People!- Sports Talk with the Straight Shuter

It’s the Super Bowl People- Sports Talk with the Straight Shuter

by Jesse Shuter

Staff Writer

This years Super Bowl is going to be one for the record books. We get to watch the number one offense take on the number one defense. We also get to watch two of the biggest NFL story lines square off against each other. The first one being Peyton Manning’s record breaking all time best season for an NFL quarterback. The other being Richard Sherman and his huge defensive abilities, and yet even bigger mouth.

I’d like to start with my prediction for the Super Bowl champion. I predict that the Broncos will win the Super Bowl over the Seahawks, 27-20. I predict a pair of field goals, at least, for both teams. The Broncos action packed weapon filled offense, will finally meet it’s match on defense. While the Seahawks offense is pretty evenly matched with the Broncos defense, except for their super weapon, some know him as “Beast Mode”, Marshawn Lynch.

The weather in this game should play a relatively big part in this game. If it is anything like the Eagles-Lions game, which assuming its snows, it will be, then it could completely alter the outcome. In snow, my prediction stays the same, however in a blizzard or even a moderately large snow storm my prediction changes. This is because in the Eagles game, there was no secondary on the defense, and no deep pass game. In this case I have Seattle winning 28-21. This is because there will be no field goals, and also seattle has a much better run game, and even though the Broncos have a better short pass game, if Percy Harvin is healthy then the Seahawks may be able to almost keep up with the Broncos pass production.

Pro Bowl Review

I would like to start by saying, nice try Rodger Goodell. The NFL Commisioner, Rodger Goodell, revamped the idea behind the Pro Bowl for the sake of the players. He in fact was ready to get rid of it because it cost much more than it earned financially. However the players much enjoy the Pro Bowl and all it’s honor. So Goodell brought in Hall of Famers Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice to make the game more fun.

I actually enjoyed the game. Sanders and Rice made sure that the defenses were actually trying, which was nice to see, at first. The first two and a half quarters were very entertaining, but then I realized that this was getting boring. As much as I hate the no defense Pro Bowl from the past, I still like seeing these insane offenses score in crazy ways that would never happen in a real game, but none of that because the defense was too good, and the offensive line was not.

My recommendation is that the Pro Bowl be replaced by a skills competition. This way the players get to be honored and the fans get to watch really great athletes to really cool things. It could be like a more advanced NFL scouting combine, with more difficult events, and also rewards. The players would be battling for titles like, fastest offensive/defensive/NFL player; most accurate passer; strongest passing arm; best catching ability offense/defense; etc.

Next Year

In the spirit of preparing for the Super Bowl, I would like to give my (very) early picks for next year.

AFC Championship Game: Indianapolis Colts vs. Kansas City Chiefs. Winner: Colts

In this epic rematch from perhaps the biggest comeback I’ve ever seen the Colts win again, and the Chiefs realize why Andy Reid was fired.

NFC Championship Game: Detroit Lions vs. Philadelphia Eagles. Winner: Eagles

Another epic rematch from the Snow Bowl, in this scenario the Eagles fix their defense by signing Jairus Byrd/T.J. Ward/Both and the Lions new head coach Jim Caldwell realizes that there is too much talent on this team for it not to be any good.

Super Bowl: Indianapolis Colts vs. Philadelphia Eagles. Winner: Colts

As much as I HATE to say it. The Eagles do not win this year, The Colts offense goes to fast for the defense and the Nick Foles makes at least one key mistake to cost them the game.
